Sinkhole Reported on Howard Street in Salem

The following information was submitted by the Salem Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:

Friday, May 3:

  • At 4:21 p.m., police responded to a report of a person living in the woods off of Lions Lane.
  • At4:57 p.m., a Salem Street man called police to report that a package was stolen from his home on Thursday.
  • At 8:50 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Pope Street.
  • At 10:41 p.m., police responded to a loud house party on High Street.

  • At 12:01 a.m., police responded to a fight with injuries at Tavern in the Square.
  • At 1:37 a.m., a Lafayette Street man called police to report that someone threw a brick through his front window.
  • At 6:20 a.m., police responded to a report of a dog running in and out of traffic on New Derby Street.
  • At 8:05 a.m., police responded to a report of a person living in the woods off of Highland Avenue.
  • At 8:01 a.m., the manager of the Dunkin' Donuts on Boston Street called police to report that a cashier stole $100 from the cash register. The woman was fired and agreed to return $100 to the store.
  • At 10:15 a.m., police responded to a report of a person walking down Highland Avenue with a hospital gown on. Police were unable to locate anyone.
  • At 11:46 a.m., an employee at the IHOP on Traders Way called police to report that their cell phone had been stolen.
  • At 1:14 p.m., a man called police to report that his boat had been broken into and vandalized sometime over the winter.
  • At 2:22 p.m., a man known to have an outstanding warrant was located by police on Raymond Road. Joseph E. Harrison Jr., 31, of 106 Rainbow Terrace, Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 3:42 p.m., police responded to a past break-in on Lafayette Street.
  • At 3:53 p.m., police responded to a report of shoplifting at the Quality Liquors on Gendney Street. Vanessa K. Caruso, 20, of the streets of Salem, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and for reportedly having an outstanding warrant. Donald J. Deragon, 24, of 10 Ord St., Salem, was arrested for shoplifting merchandise by asportation and for possessing a large knife. Brad M. West, 26, of 99 North St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting merchandise by asportation.
  • At 5:34 p.m., police responded to a report of a sinkhole on Howard Street. A hole about 18" long was found in the street and it had a "large void under the pavement." A DPW barrel was placed over the hole and the DPW was notified.
  • At 6:09 p.m., a man known to have an outstanding warrant was located on Cabot Street. Abiezer Cotto, 36, of the streets of Beverly, was arrested for reportedly having four outstanding warrants.
  • At 7:55 p.m., a woman called police to report than another motorist had just exited her vehicle and struck her in the face.
  • At 8:09 p.m., police responded to a bonfire in the woods off of Harmony Grove Road.
