Mandatory Recycling in Salem - How Would it Work?

Wondering how the city would go about implementing a mandatory recycling program?

At their meeting at City Hall Thursday night, Salem city councilors unanimously approved a motion to revisit a proposed mandatory recycling ordinance in two weeks.

The proposed ordinance, aimed at improving recycling participation among city residents, would qualify the city of Salem for $50,000 in grant funding from the state.

If approved, the new ordinance would mandate that city residents put a recycling bin containing recycled materials out along with their trash barrels each week. Though councilors were quick to point out that the implementation of the new ordinance would be accompanied by a lengthy grace period for local residents.
