Federal Shutdown Reaches Salem: Maritime National Historic Site Closed

The Salem Maritime National Historic Site was closed Tuesday.

The Salem Maritime National Historic Site was closed to visitors Tuesday morning, the result of the first government shutdown in 17 years.

Local residents lined up to take photos of signs posted around the park that read: "Because of the federal government shutdown, this National Park Service site is closed."

Many were surprised to find that the public bathrooms were locked and that The Friendship was closed to visitors.

Salem Patch will post additional information as it becomes available.
