On the article Downtown Salem Fountain Flowing Again

Speaking for myself, I am not lambasting the DPW at all. Their personel are the ones that actually got this up and running again. I think overall though there was some sort of great breakdown here for this to have gone on for three years, with no apparent major "reason". And yes, as a tourist town, one would expect things like this fountain to be a higher priority to the DPW. Or, at least on the annual check list (heck , even bi-annual)

Reply"It was an amazingly fast job by all the city departments involved and a great call by the mayor."
Sorry - but three summers sans fountain is not an "amazingly fast job". I am very happy that this is back on, and thankful to the parties that got it done, but pah-lease, lets not pat the city government on the back for this one. This is more of a display of the in-efficiencies ....

OR, and the landlord can include it in their agreement with the tenant. Just like they must pay rent everymonth, they must recycle.

Chester, Have you seen the inside of the current center?
Regarding the plans; I am not sure much would have changed from 2009 to 2013, as there has been no further movement on the building. Hence, the issue at hand. I would not have this be reason to oppose moving foward. I am sure there will be further public meetings regarding the plans for imput if this is voted to move foward (or, in this case, not voted to stop) -

Nancy, these sound helpful, and a nice addition to give to those that 'forgot their bag' as well .
I wonder if we could get signs for all the parks about these facts and the fines?
Also, I find the lack of trash barrels annoying, and probably a deterrent for some (i don't want to carry poop). I don't have a dog, so I'm guessing here. But if I recall, my last walk by the wharf (friendship part) there were no trash cans there. -

I should have clicked on the link for the SNEWS, much more info there. I am not so strongly opposed after reading more. The devil is in the details - of the missing details as it were.

ReplyI do not feel that the act of fining is going to solve the problem. In conjunction with other actions, this MIGHT. It would be helpful to know what other steps (if any) would be put in action along with this. If none, then this just feels silly.
What research has been done to propose this suggestion? Has it been successful elsewhere? What have other cities done to stop aggressive panhandling?
These meters have been brought up before, but I think they are a great idea and should be considered: http://www.atlantadowntown.com/initiatives/stop-panhandling/redirect-giving

Is there any more info behind this? Why did they withdrawal - was a compromise reached? Did the owners replace the trees? Is there another appeal in place that this one is just no longer needed? Does this mean the whole 'thing' is over and they station can fully open now?
