ReplyAccording to Salem Library documents the Plaza closed in the mid-1950s which I should have written instead of early 1950s as I did. For recent history, I was surprised to see so many conflicting dates for when Salem theaters opened and closed. Sorry for not being more precise. I'm puzzled by your empty lot comment..is that referring to something or just your comment about what is there now?

ReplyDear David,
Thanks for the update. Hopefully there are some Historic Preservation grants available for such a worthwhile project. I'm sure the specialists can help with identifying monies. It certainly would be a boon to Salem's history. Good luck with your work there. -

Thanks Donovan for your thoughts and insights. I agree that it's the atmosphere that counts. I found it interesting that the period when Lovecraft was a Salem visitor was a time before modern restorations and many an old house had been re-worked, fading or hiding its former appearance heightening the notion that buildings were hidden within buildings.
Your H.P. Lovecraft Archive is an excellent site and well worth visiting to learn about a great American writer. It was the catylist for my re-reading H.P. Lovecraft stories from my college days. Thank you for your work in maintaining the site. -

Chester, Thanks for the comment. I'm intrigued about an amunition bunker since I haven't come across any mention apart from the ammo bunkers on Winter Island. Do you have a source for that? Thanks again.

When Grant came to Salem he did so by train. You make a good point though since the term motorcade was coined around 1912 by the automotive editor for the Arizona Republic.
