ReplyIt is unlikely that they made these bombs without first making and testing at least one. It has been reported in the past that bombers usually make practice bombs before they plant the actual one.
I wonder if there is any possibility the Salem mystery booms of a few months ago could have been them testing devices?
I know nothing was ever found in the areas of where these were reported but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they could have placed the device in a wooded area, or even in the mud flats of the N. River at low tide. Areas that no one may have looked at the time of the mystery booms being reported.

ReplyI live off of Buffum and agree that it is a problem from time to time. We have two dogs and when we walk around the neighborhood we always have bags with us.
Drives me crazy when I come home from work and see a pile of poop on the sidewalk in front of my door.

ReplyPS....Any attempt at enforcement by SPD of an ordinance enacted by the council will probably lead to a costly lawsuit brought on by the ACLU. The ACLU belives that panhandling is a form of free speech.

ReplyIf everyone stopped giving them money they would move along eventually. I like the idea of placing re-purposed parking meters in the areas where they are currently panhandling. (see link below)
Some of them are beginning to get very aggressive. Actually following you and cussing at you because you did not give them any money.
If you really want to make them angry buy them a sandwich and try to hand it to them. Most will flat out refuse it.

ReplyMost all of my neighbors & I had cleared our sidewalks last weekend. The street on the other hand never saw any sand/salt and even with the "warmer" weather is still covered with ice.
The empty gas station on North St NEVER clears the side walk nor does 7-11.

Patten (sp?) Park is city owned. They would be responsible for the sidewalk. They NEVER clear the snow on that corner.

ReplySome mornings no less than a half dozen or more cars will go right past me as I stand part way into their travel lane at the 7/11 crosswalk. I would say most of them are doing 40-45. When someone does stop I have to watch out for the person behind them passing on the right. I do see an SPD officer some mornings sitting near the gas station. So there is a presence. Maybe just not often enough?

ReplyCould be bottle bombs. I won't list the how to, but they are very easy to make with household ingredients. They can be quite loud. Especially at night when it is quiet. There would not be any smoke or flash with them. I used to be a police officer and we would always be chasing down these type of calls and unless you found the exact spot where the bottle blew up it is hard to find where it occurred as they leave very little evidence. I think I also saw in the police log that on one of these nights in question the PD also had a call on Bridge St. for underage drinking.

A while back there were many late night, early morning mystery booms reported in the Salem MA Patch.
It is unlikely that they made these bombs without first making and testing at least one. It has been reported in the past that bombers usually make practice bombs before they plant the actual one.
