Saltonstall and Collins Middle School will undergo renovation work to repair damaged roofs, improve energy efficiency.
Renovation work will begin in the fall to replace the roofs on two school buildings that have been plagued by leaks for many years, although it is unclear at this stage how much the projects will cost and when work can begin. The repair work at the Collins Middle School and the K-8 Saltonstall School will also include replacement of the boilers, replacement of windows at Saltonstall and substantial masonry work on the crumbling facade of the Collins school. Superintendent Dr. William Cameron said the Massachusetts School Building Authority will review the school district's proposals this summer, before the district can put the projects out to bid. "The funding won't be assured until July," Cameron said. "I anticipate work will start in the…

Mayor Sam Zoll remembered with moment of silence before first pitch.
Salem Little League celebrated its 25th Annual Opening Day on Sunday, during a ceremony attended by players, families and little league boosters. A parade of players made its way from Salem State University to the ballfield at Forest River Park, where the ceremony began with a moment of silence in honor of former mayor Sam Zoll, before the first pitch. Among the honored guests was Anthony Salvo, who was Salem's mayor in 1987 when the Salem Little League was established. The league has grown from 220 players in 1987 to more than 600 players today, Salvo said. "The organizers are doing a great job," Salvo added. SLL President Patrick Chasse said the league has "great sponsorships, good coaches, and the kids enjoy absolutely everything about …

Salem Beer Works re-opened March 16; Renovations give the brewery and restaurant a bigger bar, booths, more tables, open feel.
People will still recognize Salem Beer Works, but renovations at the Derby Street restaurant and brewery give it an updated look and feel. The neon witch sign is still on the brick wall inside the dining room above a bank of TVs. The witch sign, showing the iconic Salem witch riding a broom, was damaged during the renovation, but should be fixed soon. "The witch is still in place and the neon will be fixed very, very soon," said Joe Ferrari, director of guest services for Beer Works. An expanded patio will allow the restaurant to "take care of people who want to sit outdoors," Ferrari said. Booths have been added, a new feature, and some of the booths have TVs. The ceiling has also been opened up to expose two skylights for natural light …

The dogs arrived at the shelter on April 1.
A special thanks to the Northeast Animal Shelter and Stephen Oakes for the following information and photos. On Friday, April 1, a crew of Chihuahuas arrived at the Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) from a Los Angeles-based shelter called Kinder 4 Rescue. Northeast Animal Shelter Communications Director Stephen Oakes said costs from the transport were paid by the Heigl Foundation, which was founded by actress Katherine Heigl in honor of her late brother. The organization is run by Heigl's mother. Oakes said many people adopt Chihuahuas on impulse, based on depictions they see on television or on film. Oftentimes, people don't fully consider the commitment and care necessary before they adopt Chihuahuas, Oakes said. "This has resulted in a …

City Council is considering an ordinance to peg School Committee compensation to the Mayor's salary.
Members of the School Committee could see a raise over their current stipend of $2,500, if the City Council passes an ordinance linking compensation to the Mayor's salary. But the proposal to increase the School Committee's stipend to $6,000 raises a host of questions about how elected City officials should be compensated. City Council President Jerry Ryan said he doesn't expect the raise to be as high as proposed, but "there will likely be changes," he said. The ordinance, proposed by School Committee member Dr. Brendan Walsh and submitted by Councilor-at-Large Thomas Furey, seeks to peg the committee stipend at six percent of the Mayor's salary, which stands at $100,000. Walsh said the committee's stipend has remained unchanged for more …

SBW needed this in a big way. The place is gorgeous inside. I have been 3 times since it re-opened and the food has been very good. Some new menu items are nice to see as well. The service has been pretty poor thus far. Brought the wrong food, brought wrong wine and argued that the person in my party did indeed order the one she brought, and just yesterday was pretty bad too....excurcuatingly …   more ›
