Police Say Duo May Have Stolen Mum Plant from Greenlawn Grave

Since there was not a named witness, charges will not be filed.

Police say a couple may have stolen a mum plant from a Greenlawn Cemetery grave on Friday morning. Police responded to the cemetery at 10:35 a.m. and spoke to a woman who said she saw a red Lincoln Town Car operated by an elderly woman stop by a grave site. When the car stopped, police said the witness told them a man exited and removed a mum plant from the grave. Police said the man asked "Do you want another one?" before the driver said "no" and the people drove away, according to the witness. Police were able to track the driver of the car down in Beverly and spoke with her. When informed of the incident, police said the woman said she was not in the cemetery and said nobody was using her car. Police said the woman's voice sounded "…

My concern about this guy and his business is the safety of his customers. Are there any inspection requirements like that for an automobile or aircraft? He doesn't seem like a businessman with sound decision-making skills (low flying over homes and faulty equipment).   more ›

War Over Veggie Garden Escalates

City orders vegetable garden removed, street put back.

The war over the vegetable garden planted on a city street escalated last week with opposing allegations of personal assault and poisioning the plants. On June 13, City Solicitor Elizabeth Rennard sent a letter advising the owner of the property adjacent to the garden that "the Temporary License Agreement issued to you on June 30, 2011 has expired. At a recent meeting of the Salem City Council, a decision was made to not renew this license and require that the street be restored promptly to its condition prior to the planting. The Wall Street residents who maintain the garden (which is technically on Richards Road) have removed the corn stalks from the dirt that once was part of the dead-end street, but they left the stakes and did not …

I agree with Don and the adult behavior issue, but I think a garden is much better use of open space then hot top in a neighborhood on a dead end road. Obvious isnt it, that a Garden is better for the environment and the community. And they are much more attractive to the eye.   more ›
