Since there was not a named witness, charges will not be filed.
Police say a couple may have stolen a mum plant from a Greenlawn Cemetery grave on Friday morning. Police responded to the cemetery at 10:35 a.m. and spoke to a woman who said she saw a red Lincoln Town Car operated by an elderly woman stop by a grave site. When the car stopped, police said the witness told them a man exited and removed a mum plant from the grave. Police said the man asked "Do you want another one?" before the driver said "no" and the people drove away, according to the witness. Police were able to track the driver of the car down in Beverly and spoke with her. When informed of the incident, police said the woman said she was not in the cemetery and said nobody was using her car. Police said the woman's voice sounded "…

City orders vegetable garden removed, street put back.
The war over the vegetable garden planted on a city street escalated last week with opposing allegations of personal assault and poisioning the plants. On June 13, City Solicitor Elizabeth Rennard sent a letter advising the owner of the property adjacent to the garden that "the Temporary License Agreement issued to you on June 30, 2011 has expired. At a recent meeting of the Salem City Council, a decision was made to not renew this license and require that the street be restored promptly to its condition prior to the planting. The Wall Street residents who maintain the garden (which is technically on Richards Road) have removed the corn stalks from the dirt that once was part of the dead-end street, but they left the stakes and did not …

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police log: Tuesday, July 10 At 4 p.m., police received a report from Winter Island of a problem with a homeless man camping on the property. According to police, the night before, the man slept on the ground outside of tents on a rented campsite. In the morning, the man allegedly wrote a note to the people in the tents, thanking them for use of the site. The couple and four kids in the tent, had no knowledge the man was outside until they got his note. At 4:39 p.m., a small child was reported in the street on Hathorne Street. When police got there, the mother was with the child. At 5 p.m., a resident of Essex Street reported a "loud bang" in the backyard and then smoke. Police did not find …

Police are searching for a tan or light colored car.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., Salem Police issued a be on the lookout alert to area departments after they received a report of an attempted abduction at Forest River Park. According to reports, an adult male was driving a tan or light colored compact sedan with a teenager with brown hair in the backseat. The two attempted to lure a 6-year-old into their car, according to reports. The parent of the child, saw what was happening and called the child's name. Salem Police and area departments are currently searching for the vehicle. They believe the license plate ends in '04.' Early reports did indicate the plate ended in 02 but police are now searching for a plate ending in 04. If you see a vehicle or people matching the description, call 911 …
