As Isaac bears down on New Orleans and reminders of Hurricane Katrina flood the news, The North Shore remembers Hurricane Irene's one-year anniversary.
With Isaac bearing down on New Orleans and the 7-year anniversary of Hurricane Kartrina in the news, we couldn't help but think of the North Shore one year ago today during our own tropical weather experience — Hurricane Irene. In the days leading up to Aug. 28, 2011, the North Shore prepared for the storm by removing boats from the water, strapping down lose items outside and readying shelters. Residents reminisced about the Great New England Hurricane of 1938, Hurricane Carol (1954), Hurricane Gloria (1985) and Hurricane Bob (1991) as Hurricane Irene moved up the coast. Remember January last year? New words like "snowpocalypse" and "snowmaggedon" seemed to be thrown around in every other sentence, and DPW spent what felt like every waking moment on the street. A year ago today, Salem was buried under a heavy blanket of snow.
On Dec. 26, 2010 the City of Salem issued a snow emergency, then, in the late afternoon, the white stuff started to fall throught the night. On this day — Dec. 27 — in 2010, Salem woke up to a thick blanket of snow, which kicked off the memorable 2010-2011 snow season. What a difference a year makes. So far, the winter season has seemed tropical compared to the one we experienced last year. Check our user submitted photos for a look at "the way it was" during the 2010 storm.

But, on this day in 2009, there was a fire — one that almost claimed one of the Salem's historic treasures — the Ropes Street Mansion.
