Salem Shelter 'Filled to Brim' With Loving Dogs

The Northeast Animal Shelter is urging city residents to consider adopting one of their dogs.

If you know someone looking to adopt a sweet pooch, the Northeast Animal Shelter needs your help. According to a recent post on the shelter's Facebook page, the organization is currently dealing with a surplus of dogs and can't continue rescuing more until area residents step up and adopt them. "Help Us! Please! We are filled to the brim with more then 40 dogs ages 1 yr and up that are on the floor for adoption. (We are not counting all the puppies looking for homes, nor the ones back in the iso area.) We cannot continue to save more lives unless we continue to adopt out," the post read. If you are interested in adopting a dog, Click Here to view the organization's website or call them at 978-745-9888.

My family has adopted from the Salem shelter many times and also from the one in Gloucester. Gloucester basically threw the dog at us and was thrilled. I agree that when we come to the shelter (often for my 4 year old to donate a bunch of change that he has collected or old towels) they look at us like we're there to bother them when we just want to look around. They need a bit of an attitude …   more ›

Northeast Animal Shelter Unveils New Cat Play Rooms [VIDEO]

The Northeast Animal Shelter unveiled their three new cat play rooms Wednesday afternoon.

Northeast Animal Shelter employees and representatives from Canyon Creek Ranch looked on with bated breath Wednesday afternoon to see how Henry the cat would react to one of the shelter's three new cat play rooms. Henry - a two-year-old cat who was brought into the shelter with his siblings about three weeks ago - was one of the shelter's felines that seemed to have too much energy to spend his time all cooped up in a cage. After spending a couple of minutes sniffing around and stretching out, Henry was happily leaping around the room and thrilled staffers by exploring his new toys and getting a feel for his surroundings. The recently-completed project was made possible thanks to a $50,000 in-kind donation to the shelter from the Canyon …

Hurricane Isaac Rescue Dogs Ready for Adoption

The dogs were transported from Florida to Salem this week.

Twenty-eight dogs that were in the path of Hurricane Isaac last week were provided shelter by the Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) and they are ready for adoption this morning (Saturday). On Aug. 26, the shelter received a message from their Florida friends and partner, C Dog Run, which was in the path of the storm.  NEAS Development Director Laurie McCannon said the organization was "pleading for us to take in 28 of their dogs ahead of the evacuation that [had] been mandated for their town (Crestview/DeFuniak Springs) in Florida due to Hurricane Isaac."  Dogs were in foster homes and their caregivers refused to leave them despite the threat of the storm, according to the shelter.  NEAS sprung into action and organized transport and …

Northeast Animal Shelter Saving Dogs in Path of Isaac

As Isaac turns into a hurricane threatening the Gulf Coast, Salem's Northeast Animal Shelter is doing its best to help.

As Isaac churns in the Gulf, nearly a hurricane, the Northeast Animal Shelter is doing its part to help rescue dogs in the path of the storm. "C Dog Run has called us pleading for us to take in 28 of their dogs ahead of the evacuation that has been mandated for their town (Crestview/DeFuniak Springs) in Florida due to Hurricane Isaac," Northeast Animal Shelter Development Director Laurie McCannon wrote to Patch in a press release. Electricity is expected to go out on Wednesday in that area, according to McCannon.  McCannon said many of the dogs are in foster homes and those caring for the dogs refuse to leave their dogs behind. Northeast Animal Shelter employees have surveyed their space and contacted a transport company — Puppy Pipeline…

Hello Alyssa, The NEAS states they're beagle pups, but I think they look much more like coonhounds, a much, much larger breed. In a quick web search I found this information that may be helpful: Take the weight of your medium to large mixed-breed puppy at 14 weeks and multiple it by 2. Halve the weight of your puppy at 14 weeks and add it to the total of the weight at 14 weeks multiplied by 2. …   more ›
