What Should Go Here?: Front Street

This commercial space on Front Street is still vacant. What would you like to see move in?

Marketplace Quilts moved to a new location last summer and this commercial space at 6 Front St. is still vacant. The building is located steps away the Fire Department, Derby Square and Artists' Row. As part of our Visions for Vacancies column, we want to know - what kind of business do you think should move in at this location? Have you been hoping for a certain kind of business to come to town? Is there something you think would thrive in this section of Salem? Let us know in the comments section below.

The store is already going to be something. ALPrime is in agreement to buy the building and is going to be rebuilding the entire corner of the block to make a larger, safer, way better gas station and store on the property. They were just stopped from having 24hour a day gas, which is awesome, but as far as you asking what should go here, you should have asked what IS going here?   more ›

What's the Perfect Match for This Essex Street Storefront?

Play developer and tell us what you think should replace Michael Roberts Hair Fashions.

The building, which is available through The Drumlin Group, is located adjacent to Witch City Thrift and the Crombie Street lot. If you had the resources and the authority to decide what would go here, what would you choose? Tell us in the comments.

Glenn, I agree. However, it seems that the majority of comments/commentors on all the previous "what should go in [place]'s old space" go on anti-witch shop rants and pretty much want them ALL gone, including the ones that have been on Essex Street for years. I'd love to see things like a normal bookshop (I rarely shop in the one on Essex anymore, too cramped, impossible to find things, and I'm …   more ›

There's a space open in the Upper Washington Street lot near Starbucks; tell us what you would like to see in that space.

There's an open space in the Upper Washington Street parking lot, and we want to know what you'd like to see there. The building, which is available through RCG, is located adjacent to Metro PCS and steps away Starbucks and Frankenstein's Art. If you had the resources and the authority to decide what would go here, what would you choose? How can we improve this area of Washington Street? What would you like to see? Tell us in the comments.

Does anyone remember the cheese & onion bagels that Mello's Bakery used to make ? They took a regular bagel & added a good size spoonful of what could have been a "farmer''s cheese & fresh onion mix to the center of the bagel just before it went into the oven. (The cheese resembled cottage cheese, & browned up nicely ). Fantastic, especially when still hot out of the oven ! One more locally …   more ›

What Should Go in Healthworks Old Location?

Play developer, and tell us what should go in this Highland Avenue spot.

Healthworks Fitness Center's location on Highland Avenue closed on April 30 after 33 years in business, leaving an empty commercial space. Some work has been done to the wiring in the ceiling, and there's been some work on the floors, but the space is currently empty, and there haven't been any public announcements that something else is moving in. All that's left from Healthworks is a sign announcing the closure, complete with a list of the company's other locations. Take a look at the photo attached to this article. If you had the resources and the authority to decide what would go at the old Healthworks location, what would you choose? Tell us in the comments. Unless you are handicapped, the parking is fine. There are hundreds of parking spaces near the post office and Dodge Street which are, in my experience, always available. From there it's less than a five minute walk to City Hall. For the handicapped there are spaces available in front of the building. Unfortunately, for most of those who complain about parking in Salem, extreme laziness is not (…   more ›

What Should Go in This Pickering Wharf Spot?

Play developer, and tell us what you want in this spot.

Here's another spot on Pickering Wharf in need of a tenant.  This spot is located smack dab in the middle of the Wharf at approximately 63/65 Wharf St. It's in the middle section of the wharf, next to a new store Flirt, which is coming soon, and diagonally across from Vic's Station. Take a look at the photo attached to this article. If you had the resources and the authority to decide what would go here, what would you choose? Tell us in the comments. If you'd like us to get reader input on a certain vacant spot in the city, be sure to let us know in the comments, and we would be happy to feature it.
