Salem may end up getting between four and eight inches of snow this weekend.
The snow from the Blizzard of 2013 may be melting, but don't go putting the shovels away just yet - this weekend is bringing us more snow. A new snowstorm is headed our way for Saturday and Sunday, and Salem could end up seeing another 8 inches of snow before it's done. On his blog, WHDH meteorologist Pete Bouchard is calling for light rain along the coast Saturday with snow inland and snow everywhere by Sunday morning. There may also be some coastal flooding. "Heavy snow through early morning Sunday. Roads will be tough to travel, and yes, your flight will most likely be delayed or cancelled. Salem is expected to get between two and four inches of snow before the end of the day Sunday.
Though the first round of precipitation Saturday evening brought mostly rain to the city of Salem - that doesn't mean we're out of the woods just yet. The National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect rain showers to switch over to snow showers sometime after 2 p.m. Sunday. The total daytime snow accumulation will be about an inch. These light snow showers are expected to persist into the night Sunday with new snow accumulation between 2 to 4 inches possible before the sun rises for the Monday morning commute, according to Channel 7 Weather Expert Pete Bouchard's latest blog post. Forecasters are warning that the timing of an approaching snowstorm may make the Monday afternoon and evening commute slippery.
There may be an inch or two of snow on the ground by Monday evening's commute, according to forecasters at WHDH-TV. "Don't expect a ton of snow, but a general 1-3" falls late Monday afternoon, through the evening, producing slick roads, perhaps in time for the ride home from work," writes meterologist Chris Lambert in his latest blog. Even though not much snow will fall, Lambert said that the snow "will create slick spots on the roads Monday evening and Monday night." The National Weather Service forecasts that the snow will start after 2 p.m. in Salem. The precipitation will change over to sleet later in the evening. A little more than a week after 'superstorm' Sandy swept through Salem, residents may have to brace for another windy, rainy night on Wednesday. A nor'easter could blow into the area mid-week and the storm could drop 1 to 2 inches of rain from Wednesday into Thursday, according to WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Rainer. We've never seen rainbows stacked in opposite directions. It's probably the last we will see of clear skies for days. Also in the mix is a shot from George Allen above Fisherman's Beach at night. The streak of light is likely from a small plane, the trail of light a product of the extended photo exposure.

The latest track of Hurricane Sandy has the storm pushing farther west according to this morning’s meteorologist reports. The National Hurricane Center has the center of the storm going either into Southern New Jersey or Delaware. The storm has the potential to affect Salem's Haunted Happenings celebrations. This is a constantly changing storm and a more northern track, which is possible, would bring more significant impacts into New England. The exact path remains a mystery, but forecast models indicate Hurricane Sandy won't just swing out to sea as she heads north.
Is your Halloween costume waterproof? Salem's Halloween might be a weather event to remember. "There is a consensus forming in weather forecast models that hurricane Sandy is unlikely to go out to sea," according to The Washington Post. It gets worse. A system likely to become Tropical Storm Sandy is on a track toward the East Coast.
Do you remember that snowstorm that dumped snow and slush just before Halloween last year? Well, get ready for another potential Halloween storm. This time it likely won't bring snow to New England, but it could bring heavy rain and damaging winds early next week. A tropical depression in the central Caribbean may strengthen to become a tropical storm by Tuesday (Oct. 23). Tropical Depression 18 had maximum sustained winds of only 30 mph on Monday afternoon, but the system is expected to intensify quickly and could be near hurricane strength (winds of at least 74 mph) as it approaches Jamaica on Wednesday. National Grid faced fierce criticism for its response to Hurricane Irene and an October snowstorm last year but said on Tuesday it is ready for heavy winds and rain on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
National Grid officials said on Tuesday that they are ready for the expected gusty winds and heavy rain that is forecasted to move into the area on Tuesday night. The utility company has come under fire for previous storm responses, including during a snowstorm last fall. In July, state Attorney General Martha Coakley proposed fining the company a record $16 million for what she said was an inadequate response to the October storm and also Hurricane Irene last August.
