Salem Theatre Company to Present 'Smudge'

Play runs from June 16 to July 9.

The following press release is courtey of the Salem Theatre Company. The Salem Theatre Company will present the Ghostlight Theatre Company production of Smudge, a new play by Rachel Axler, as part of STC’s Music & More Series. The production is directed by Salem resident and Salem State University alum, Devon Scalisi, and will open Thursday, June 16. Smudge, written by Emmy Award winner Rachel Axler (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Parks and Recreation), is a dark comedy about the changing face of the American family and the limits of love and cheesecake, as a hopeful young couple gives birth to a “smudge." Salem Theatre Company Brings 'Home-Grown Feeling' To Christmas

Salem Theatre Company’s production of “The Long Christmas Ride Home” opened on Wednesday.

Wednesday was opening night for Salem Theatre Company's production of "The Long Christmas Ride Home." Written in 2004 by Pulitzer Prize winning female playwright Paula Vogel, "The Long Christmas Ride Home" is an exercise in story-telling. In the program, Vogel is quoted as saying: "I wrote this play mindful of pageants that are performed in church basements and community halls… What I am after is the magic we feel from communal participation in the make-believe of the spirit. With a few simple effects …we are transported by the story told in our community." Director John Fogle designed the current Salem Theatre Company season. Fogle said this play isn't a jolly vision of Christmas but, "a cautionary tale." The play is dark at times, but …
