Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the things our readers had to say this week.

Salem Council Approves Mandatory Recycling Don Nadeau: Or folks could just do the right thing from the start and save all the effort and expense of re-educating them. Jean Woods: I recycle every week, but I do not use the "Standard" recyling container. I place my recycling in paper bags, therefore, I do not need to worry about taking in my recycle container, as I work during the day. Will this be acceptable? Or is the "standard" reclying container goingt to be mandatory? Rachel Warner: How can we expect the folks from Northside to enforce the policy if they don't even pick up the trash they leave behind when they fling the trash barrels around ? Bill: That stinks for owners of rental property. How are they supposed to enforce that with …

Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the things our readers had to say this week.

Salem Council Lifts Lid on Leaf Blower Debate sharon: seriously ??? Don't we have more pressing issues to talk about besides using a leafblower?  gene: It's an issue when your inconsiderate neighbor uses this device every Sunday morning while you are trying to relax. A little consideration goes a long way. Nancy Gilberg: It's also an issue in the larger apartment / condo complexes, where teams of landscapers scour the entire neighborhood once a week for hours. I'd be fine with a spring cleanup, a fall cleanup, and an occasional touch up. Weekly is overkill, it's smelly, it pollutes, is dusty, scares the pets, and disrupts any time outdoors. Mike Lash: Rake and compost. Has bee Working fine for hundreds of years with no ecological impact. …

Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the things our readers had to say this week.

Another Round of Weekend Car Breaks in Salem Bill: Three people left their wallet in an unlocked car? How is that possible? How clueless can you be? Darwin was right. Dawn Cerbone: Why would you leave anything of value in your car and then not lock it?!! Jes: You people are just ASKING for this to happen! Just keep your vehicles unlocked, and it will be in the police log again, I'm sure. Todd Doehner: I've always respected a tip I saw posted at a popular but sketchy surf spot in California: "Leave your car unlocked to avoid un-necessary breaking-and-entering damage." Provided you're not leaving a wallet or other valuables in the car, the most costly part of a break-in is likely to be the damage to the vehicle. Salem's St. Joseph Church …

Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at what our readers had to say about this week's top stories.

Gallon-Smashing Incident at Salem Shaw's Rhonda Culbert: Disgusting! Thanks for showing us what's happening. The kids obviously know about it already and this certainly isn't promoting it MM. It's to help us adults be aware of what's happening. These kids are hurting all of us because the cost will just be added to prices that are high already. Linn Schulz: It's not funny. It's dangerous for the other shoppers AND, quite honestly, it's theft. Theft of the gallons of product and theft of insurance money (if the perpetrator makes a claim), etc. Definitely disgusting. Glad it's being videoed to show it for the scam that it is. Bill: Man, social media is making dumb people even dumber. What a disrespectful thing to do to get your 15 seconds of…

Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the things our readers had to say this week.

Dog Poop on the Sidewalk: Is It a Problem in Your Neighborhood? Nancy Gilberg: Chris, this is an unfortunate problem that most neighborhoods have. When you license your dog, not only does the license document say that you are required to pick up after your dog, I believe it also says that you must carry means to pick up (e.g. plastic bag). If I see someone not pick up, I smile and ask if they need a bag. Usually they say yes, thank you. Occasionally someone will angrily respond, "who are you, the poop police?" Lisa Dolloff: No pick up poop -> no license -> no dog. Too harsh, or justified actions? Carolyn Costain: My sister and I walk dogs in North Salem and both of us have pockets full of bags "not that our dogs are big poop heads" but If …

Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the things our readers have had to say this week.

A Virtual Mack Park Toboggan Ride bella traesch-doeg: great video! glad that child wasn't injured at the end of your ride. City to Salem Residents: Clear Those Sidewalks gene: Let me start off by saying I not only clear the sidewalk in front of my hose, but also help my neighbors clear theirs. However, the City owns the sidewalk so why am I required to keep it clear of snow? I am not required to repair the sidewalk am I? Isn't this involuntary servitude? john: I have lived in Salem for over 50 years and have never heard of a resident being fined for not clearing there sidewalk. Mayor Driscoll will stop at nothing to continue to take money from Salem taxpayers. Plows put over six feet of snow on my sidewalk and front lawn, you put it there …

Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the comments made by our readers this week.

Lovely Says Flooding Among Top Concerns for District Meghan: What Salem flooding, you can't drive down Canal Street or Jefferson Ave. What about the small businesses there? gene: Add upper Bridge St to the list. Flooding has driven a number of those businesses right out. windpower: The flood risk in the blubber hollow area of Salem are real and often . The NOAA weather site has reset their astronimical high tide forcast to show the cover up the rise of tide ..In the past a 12.2 tide at Boston was the highest , now it is 12. 4 . How do I know ? I follow the tide daily and called them out on it last year . . With the greenies crying GW we have all noticed the flooding in this area . The very same area that is planning on affordable housing ,…

Thankful CinemaSalem Offering Free 'Princess Bride' Screening: ranadavid2002: I am so thankful this theater was saved. It's a staple of our Salem community, and my16 year old son has grown up going there and I'd like him someday to bring his children there. So congrats Salem :) David Sanderson: Great!!! Its a cute theater and a convenient location in the heart of Downtown Salem.... A Look Around Salem's New iTaco: Drew: The guacamole is made to order and the prices are great. A fine addition to the mall. Cwheels: I'm downtown all the time and I would have never know this place existed. Museum Place = Death How Should I Dispose of My Clementine Crates? Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the things our readers had to say this week.

--- Where is Salem's Most Dangerous Intersection? Derek B: Forest, Lafayette, Clifton crossing. Put up a set of lights that trigger when there is a car waiting. bobhc2: Valley St at highland ave several people have been seriously injured and killed at that intersection becasue of higher speeds on highland ave and people try and take a left turn on to highland from Valley instead of using cherry hill ave which has the light and is much safer! I feel that if you made valley a one way from Cherry hill to highland ave so that cars are forced to use Cherry hill ave or atlease put a sign to encourage cars to use Cherry instead! drew from salem: Still waiting for those lights to come back to the crosswalks at Winter and Bridge. Half the time, …

Please don't talk about dangerous intersections because the city keeps putting up new traffic lights, but they never remove existing lights, which means gridlock is going to get worse and worse. Please, for the love of God, can we just enforce basic traffic rules rather than putting a traffic light at every possible intersection. There is inherent risk associated with diving and some risk should …   more ›

Salem Patch Reader Comments of the Week

Here's a look back at some of the things our readers had to say this week.

How Will Sale of Shaw's Impact Salem's Store? Sue: Bring a TRADER JOE'S back over this way or Wegman's Diane H: I agree! Bring back Trader Joes....Wegman's would be great too! Edward: Wegmans would be interesting, but the size of the stores they plan to open, are around 100,000 sq. ft., if not larger. But I believe the size of the Salem Shaws isn't that large. john: Costco or BJ,s chester suchecki: law and order at market basket instead of the dog eat dog frenzy that exists there now. Edward: 'dog eat dog frenzy'? Chester - you're being too kind! I think it's even worse than that! LOL! Erin Cyr: Trader Joe's only opens about 8 locations nationwide per year, we're actually pretty lucky to have the one in Peabody. George Smith: The people …
