Love in Every Stitch: Salem Quilters Send Gift to Boston Bombing Victim

A group of Salem seniors patched together a beautiful quilt that will be sent along to a victim of the Boston Marathon bombings.

The Salem Council on Aging Quilting Group recently completed a beautiful sports-themed quilt for a young member of the Richard family. The group spent more than a month creating the quilt, which will be delivered to a sibling of 8-year-old Martin Richard, who lost his life in the Boston Marathon bombings. Martin Richard's father, Bill Richard, is a 1988 graduate of Salem High School. His daughter, Jane, lost a leg in the attack and his wife, Denise, also suffered serious injuries. The family lives in Dorchester. Quilting Group members include: Jeanne Collier, Ann Fournier, Jeanne Pitman, Angie Adams, Nancy Burnett, Denise Dodge, Pauline Sullivan, Kathy Markan.

The video is great for authenticating the arrival in Boston Harbor..... but for me it imitates how I am forced to spend so much of my regular life - in the fast track. I enjoy this ferry ride every summer and one of the reasons is it gives me the opportunity to slow down, take notice of my surroundings and appreciate them. We are so lucky we live on the East Coast but few of us have time to enjoy…   more ›

our heritage includes horrible cobblestone streets? Oh, thats how the streets were in puritan times? The cobblestone streets were also used by horse and carriages, not cars. Is Ford destroying our heritage as well? They should all be removed. If not, every man should be forced to walk down the cobblestone, in heels. It is fun, really. And why yes, a main street in any town should make way for …   more ›

Murray to Resign June 2; Patrick Calls Him 'Outstanding Partner'

Outgoing lieutenant governor said recent controversies had nothing to do with decision to resign.

Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said none of the controversies that have dogged him during his tenure on Beacon Hill contributed to his decision to announce his resignation. In a press conference at the State House Wednesday, Murray said his final day on the job will be June 2. The next day he will take over as president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce where his salary will reportedly be around $200,000. In January, Murray said he had no intention of running for governor when Gov. Deval Patrick's term expires in January 2015. "This has been a very difficult but empowering decision," Murray said. "It has been an honor to serve as lieutenant governor." Patrick called Murray an "outstanding partner" during his time in …

A Virtual Look Inside Salem State's New Library

Local officials took a guided hard hat tour of Salem State University's Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons Friday afternoon.

City and state officials were treated to a hard hat tour of Salem State University's new $74 million Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons Friday afternoon. The new library will replace the old building, which was "outdated and had been plagued with problems since its construction," according to release. What's Next for the Salem Willows Pier?

Wondering what's next for the storm-damaged pier at Salem Willows Park? You're not the only one.

The storm-damaged Salem Willows pier is still closed to city residents. The good news, according to Salem Harbormaster Bill McHugh, is that the Willows pier was well-insured prior to being damaged and the insurance adjuster has been notified that it is currently in need of extensive repairs. The Salem News is reporting this morning that bids for the repair project are expected to go out sometime this month. McHugh also pointed out that the damage seen in the photographs attached to this post wasn't only inflicted during The Blizzard of 2013 - the pier has taken a beating during other recent high-water events, including Hurricane Sandy and even this latest round of winter weather. Do you have a question for us? No matter how strange it may …
