At a quad-meet at Hamilton-Wenham on Saturday, Dec. 18, the Witches wrestling team earned wins over Everett and the host Generals to improve its record to 4-2. The team’s next match is away on Wednesday, Dec. 22 against Georgetown/Ipswich.
It was a dominating day for the Salem High wrestling team as it won both of its matches during a quad-meet at Hamilton-Wenham on Saturday, Dec. 18. The Witches (4-2) earned 54-24 and 24-12 wins over Everett and Hamilton-Wenham respectively, recording a combined 11 pins in the two matches; in fact, all of the contests at the meet were decided by way of pin and only one made it past the second period. "I thought we wrestled pretty good," said Witches head coach Adam Schroeder, "some of the other teams were giving up some weight-classes so we tried not to take any of the forfeits, and instead have our guys just out-wrestle their opponents." Salem started the day against Everett and earned six straight pins, five of which came in the first …

In the first meet of the winter season, the Salem High boys and girls track teams were both dealt losses by the Peabody Tanners. The girls lost 11-75 while the boys fell 19-67.
It was a rocky to start to the 2010-11 winter track season, as both the boys and girls Salem High track teams lost to Peabody on Monday, Dec. 13. The girls scored 11 points to the Lady Tanners' 75, but there were a few runners that posted promising finishes. Casey Lavoie claimed second place in the 300, with a time of 46.1 seconds. The brightest moment for the Lady Witches was in the hurdles, where Devyn Ryan and Khrisna Corpuz finished first and second respectively in times of 7.3 and 7.6 seconds on the 45 yard track at Peabody High. The boys managed slightly better results, with seven top three finishes, but it was still not enough to catch the Peabody runners, who won 19-67. Leading the charge for the Witches was Chris Bozarjian, who …

The fall season has passed and winter teams are gearing up for their 2010-11 campaigns. Here is a look at each of the winter teams and what they look to bring to the court, pool, ice, mat, beam/bars/floor and track this season.
It is time for the winter seasons to begin. Here is a brief look into what the winter Witches teams have to offer: Coach Addesa believes this will be another rebuilding season, with some possible struggles for the team. "We are young in goal, and very inexperienced on defense. I am hoping that we can have some fun this year and motivate others to join," he said. The team is still dealing with low numbers, even after the inclusion of a co-op with Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, but returning players Zack Holt and Jesse Wilkins should have a big impact on the Witches' success this season. The SHS Swimming & Diving team is coming off of its first winning season in 10 years and hopes to build on that success. Leading the Witches in the …

The Salem High cross-country teams both finished their seasons at the MIAA Eastern Mass. Divisional Championships on Nov. 13 at Franklin Park.
It was a tough season for the Salem High cross-country teams, who found themselves up against strong competition from teams with larger rosters. This fact once again put the Witches in a tough position as they faced off against the best teams in Eastern Mass. Division II at the MIAA EMass Divisional Championships on Nov. 13 at Franklin Park. The boys and girls finished 24 of 26 and 23 of 23 respectively, but head coach Annie Wilhelmy has still been impressed with her teams' performances. "We have never run a race this big before," she said, "so I think they did well, all things considered." Taking top spot for the boys was senior Kinnon Church, who finished 83 with a time of 18:50. Church was coming off of a 27 finish at the Northeastern …

The Salem High cross-country teams both took place in the NEC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Bradley Palmer State Park in Topsfield. Their overall places were not high, but the young teams have much to look forward to in the coming seasons.
It has been an exciting season for the Salem High cross-country teams, fighting against low numbers to post solid results against some talented Northeastern Conference competition. The Lady Witches were able to run to a 4-2 dual meet record, while the boys put together a 2-4 record with only five runners. "It has been an interesting learning season for us because of the newness of our team," says first year coach Annie Wilhelmy, who leads both the girls and boys squads. "We also switched up our home course, which also adds a level of newness to [the season]." At Saturday's NEC cross-country championships the teams did not place very high — tenth place for the boys and ninth for the girls — but their performance was a good sign for Wilhelmy…

Lacrosse players from past and present met on Saturday for an annual Alumni Game on Alumni Field at the O’Keefe Center Athletic Complex.
In what has become an annual event, the Salem State Men's Lacrosse program hosted its Sixth Annual Alumni Game Fundraiser on Saturday at Alumni Field. "I thought...the night was a success," said Head Coach Trevor Eaton ('01/'05), who played midfield and attack for the Vikings during his years at Salem State. "Everyone played hard and had a great time." The game, which featured the current team against the assembled alumni for the first three seasons, now is a contest of two randomly grouped alumni teams. This new format is made possible by the more than 100 lacrosse alumni with roots to the Salem State program. "We saw about 30 alumni from the last two decades [Saturday night]," said Eaton. Players at the alumni event represented teams …

The Scarlet Knights controlled their game against the host Witches Saturday night at Bertram Field in Salem, winning 33-8.
The Salem Witches Varsity football team had been on quite a roll lately, jumping out to a 3-0 start to the 2010 season, but they were given a glimpse of what the other side looks like, as they were beaten 33-8 by the visiting North Andover Scarlet Knights on Saturday night at Bertram Field. North Andover grabbed the win on strong play from junior Quarterback Brandon Walsh, who threw for two touchdowns and took two more into the endzone himself, in addition to smothering defense from the entire Scarlet Knights core. Salem earned the first possession of the game, but was forced to punt on four downs, letting North Andover gain control of the game's tempo. The Scarlet Knights took full advantage of their possession, earning five first downs …
