Witches Cross-Country Teams End Season at Eastern Mass. Championships

The Salem High cross-country teams both finished their seasons at the MIAA Eastern Mass. Divisional Championships on Nov. 13 at Franklin Park.

It was a tough season for the Salem High cross-country teams, who found themselves up against strong competition from teams with larger rosters. This fact once again put the Witches in a tough position as they faced off against the best teams in Eastern Mass. Division II at the MIAA EMass Divisional Championships on Nov. 13 at Franklin Park. The boys and girls finished 24 of 26 and 23 of 23 respectively, but head coach Annie Wilhelmy has still been impressed with her teams' performances. "We have never run a race this big before," she said, "so I think they did well, all things considered." Taking top spot for the boys was senior Kinnon Church, who finished 83 with a time of 18:50. Witches Cross-Country Takes Strides

The Salem High cross-country teams both took place in the NEC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Bradley Palmer State Park in Topsfield. Their overall places were not high, but the young teams have much to look forward to in the coming seasons.

It has been an exciting season for the Salem High cross-country teams, fighting against low numbers to post solid results against some talented Northeastern Conference competition. The Lady Witches were able to run to a 4-2 dual meet record, while the boys put together a 2-4 record with only five runners. "It has been an interesting learning season for us because of the newness of our team," says first year coach Annie Wilhelmy, who leads both the girls and boys squads. "We also switched up our home course, which also adds a level of newness to [the season]." At Saturday's NEC cross-country championships the teams did not place very high — tenth place for the boys and ninth for the girls — but their performance was a good sign for Wilhelmy…
