Campaign Trail Sizzles for Summer

Here's an update on the state Senate race for the 2nd Essex District.

[Editor's Note: This article has been updated to reflect a correction. Joan Lovely's campaign did file a year-end report for 2011 in accordance with campaign finance law, but at the local level in Salem for her current term as a city councilor. The Office of Campaign and Political Finance also finally allowed Lovely to drop her longstanding debt, which was due to a disagreement with a printer on services provided under contract.] Summer is definitely here and the candidates are taking every advantage of favorable weather to hit the streets for visible campaigning. Salem city councilor Joan Lovely, in the state Senate race to succeed Fred Berry, marched in the North Shore Pride Parade from Riley Plaza to Salem Common on Saturday, as her …

We need MORE independent people in politics. People who aren't in hock to big oil, big unions, and on a local level, under the control of the party bosses. We need politicians who will consider the needs of the district and analyze the possible solutions and their merits to do what is best for all. I do not want someone like Slattery, who is endorsed by every public union and who's range of …   more ›

Lovely Endorsed By State Women's PAC in Senate Race

State Senate candidate Joan Lovely has been endorsed by a statewide political action committee seeking to get more women involved in politics and influence public policy.

It may sound at first like an about-face on her pledge more than two months ago, but state Senate candidate Joan Lovely says her endorsement Monday by the Mass. Women's Political Caucus Political Action Committee is not financial in nature. “We are very proud to endorse Joan Lovely for Massachusetts Senate,” said MWPC Executive Director Priti Rao in a press statement. “Joan has been an outstanding public servant with her 15 years on the Salem City Council. She understands the needs and issues most pertinent to the 2nd Essex community. Working on the local level, she has seen the effects of budget cuts on local citizens and she will be a tremendous advocate for bringing resources back to this district,” said Rao. The PAC calls itself "a …

One more correction, Klassy. Joan did file a 2011 end of year report. Here is a link to it. http://www.salem.com/Pages/SalemMA_Clerk/CampaignFinance/lovelyj/Joan%20Lovely%20Year%20End%202011.pdf Note that she paid a parking ticket with campaign money. That explains why she has no problem voting for increases in parking fines because she doesn't pay them with her own money.   more ›

I watched the debate on line--the most boring I can ever remember. Mary Ellen Manning the obvious winner--outclassed this field. She is the only common sense person running on a solid platform--lower taxes, less goverment, encourage the private sector to creat jobs! Slattery is a pompous bully and Lovely a total dimwit! Mabye the real winner was Ed Carrol who could not attend. He is the ONLY non …   more ›

A letter from IAFF Local 2038 President Brian Barry on Friday announced that the union was endorsing Slattery. Slattery said he was honored to have the support.
