Salem Police Aid Injured Cooper's Hawk

A young hawk is being nursed back to health thanks to a Federal Street woman and the quick response of a local police officer.

For most injured wild animals, being discovered by a passing canine can be extremely dangerous. But for a young Cooper's Hawk that was found in front of a Federal Street home Tuesday evening, being sniffed out by a local pooch may have saved its life. It was just after 6 p.m. Tuesday when a local woman called the police station to report that her dog had found a young hawk under the bushes in her front yard and, despite all the barking, it wasn't moving. Fearing it was injured, the woman reached out to local police and officer Michael Levesque responded to the scene, located the injured raptor and brought it back to the station for safe-keeping. The following morning, the hawk was transported to Byfield, where it was handed over to …

Giving Tuesday: A Chance to Give Back During the Holiday Season

North Shore-based HAWC, Fitzgerald Cancer Fund, and Project Adventure are among the nonprofits trying to encourage people to pause in their shopping and find a way to help others.

Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season? A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. For many people, the holiday shopping marathon began on Thanksgiving day, with some national chains opening their doors just hours after the traditional turkey dinner. Then comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, which has morphed into Cyber Week. Now, there's a new campaign asking you to open your wallet: Giving Tuesday. The Giving Tuesday website says the effort, coming on the heels of days devoted to consumerism, is designed "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." …

Patch & AOL Send Hurricane Sandy Relief Trucks to Long Island, New Jersey

Employees help out, and you can, too.

It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate. "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could help more. So for us AOLers and Patchers…

TELL US: Who Makes a Difference in Salem?

Help showcase people who are doing great things in your community with our new feature, Count Us In.

Your neighbor who volunteers at the library, your child’s bus driver, and the Little League coach in your community may not seem to have much in common at first glance. But Patch’s new initiative, Count Us In, aspires to bring together all Good Samaritans by highlighting residents who are exemplary at making your community a more positive place. From the Salem Fire Department doing their part to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association to Ericka Ayube's efforts to help Salemites do their part to make a change, Salem has many people trying to do good. Partnering with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC), Count Us In aims to illustrate HPHC's values. They believe that “amazing things happen when people work together” and that is why we want …

I would like to give a shout out to Bonnie C., Parking Clerk (sorry if I have the job title wrong) for being more than fair hearing everyone's grumblings (especially mine) over parking tickets during the confusion of the ever-changing parking fiasco! Thank you, Bonnie for your smiling face and calm demeanor, and for representing Residents of Salem vs visitors and tourists!   more ›
