A Voice In Salem

Washington Street Crosswalks a Daily Gauntlet

Pedestrians and drivers duel for supremacy.

Washington Street runs from Bridge Street where the train station is, down to Canal Street where it veers sharply to the left and continues past Mill Hill to Lafayette Street. On that stretch of road, there are 11 different marked crossing points consisting of 14 crosswalks and four sets of traffic/pedestrian control signals.   I am aware of eight separate serious accidents on this stretch of Salem roadway that have resulted in serious injury and one fatality over the last 10 years, the death of a bicyclist just a few weeks ago being the most recent. It seems that every day drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians engage in a contest of wills while navigating from one point to another. Drivers turn right on red and ignore crosswalks, …

I see the problem and commiserate with all motorists driving that route and others throughout Salem. My biggest pet peeve is with all those crosswalks and pedestrian lights for crossing, why are there so many clueless Jay-walkers? Mayor Asks Council to Nix Meters at Steve's Quality Market

Driscoll also asks council to reconsider plans for meters at post office.

This spring, the city began implementing a new comprehensive parking plan that the council approved last June. Developed by a group of various city stakeholders, it was designed to create 15 percent parking availability in the downtown area and "substantially decrease" parking garage costs, according to the mayor…

John, only two meters on Margin St.might be removed. All other meters proposed for Steve;s, Quality Liquors, and other stores on Gedney St are still ordered. Talk to Peter and Ann at Steve's. When the reporter from Salem News called Peter, Peter misunderstood -he thought at first all meters along his and other adjacent stores were nixed. Not so.   more ›

City Negotiating for New Parking Lot

Vacant property on Derby Street may become city-run lot in time for October festivities.

Mayor Kimberley Driscoll is negotiating with the owners of the vacant lot at 289 Derby St. to allow the city to operate a parking lot. The lot, which has been called “an eyesore”, is adjacent to the Hess Station. It is fenced off, but has stacks of old lumber and other debris on it. “We’ll charge a fee for parking there during the day, but it also will be available for overnight and snow emergency parking,” said Jason Silva, the mayor's chief of staff. “We’ve heard from residents and merchants in the area about their concerns with parking and thought that this would provide an additional option especially during the high demand season and during snow emergencies.” Silva said making turning the vacant site into a city-operated parking lot “…
