Immaculate Conception Terminates Lease with Boys & Girls Club

The club's lease with the church ends on Aug.16, 2013.

The following was submitted by The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem. The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem will continue to serve the youth of Salem in its current location at 13 Hawthorne Boulevard for this entire school year.  However, the Club has received notice from the Immaculate Conception Parish, that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, owner of the Hawthorne Boulevard building, will terminate the Club’s lease and tenancy as of mid-August 2013. The Parish has not stated a reason nor is it required to do so. However, it is probable that the Archdiocese intends to lease all or part of the building to a new middle school, to be named The Nativity School, for the 2013-14 academic year. According to John Neely, president of the…

I'm sure opportunities to help will unfold as a plan is made. I have never worked for the Club, but I have volunteered for many years and seen first hand the tremendous positive influence it has in the lives of our members and their families.   more ›

Community Charter School to Open Doors [VIDEO]

The Salem Community Charter School will welcome new students on Thursday.

The Salem Community Charter School will welcome 50 new students to their temporary space in the Museum Place Mall on Thursday. With ages ranging between 16 and 23, the school aims to provide a welcoming and flexible environment for students who are committed to completing their high school education despite any previous challenges met in more traditional school systems.  Principal Jess Yurwitz and staff have been tirelessly setting up the transient classrooms, filling them with requested bean bags for 'town' meetings and creative wall hangings. The school has raised $250,000 in startup and grant money, and plans to move into a new space overlooking Essex Street once construction finishes in January.

As Saltonstall undergoes renovations, students were welcomed to their new home at St. James Parish.

Saltonstall students and parents braved the gloomy weather for the first day of school Wednesday morning. Entering their temporary home at St. James Parish, teachers and staff welcomed the onslaught of eager children to their new classrooms as the school's Lafayette Street location undergoes renovations. With a smooth drop-off system for parents and all-hands-on-deck strategy to shuffle the grades into their new wings, the transition was a successful one without a single lost or teary eyed child in sight. Salem Schools Adopt New Techonology Use Agreement with Students

State law requires all schools to adopt a policy of responsible technology use. As a result, Salem Public School Systems will enter into agreement with students, parents and faculty on the proper use of technology and electronics.

As your kids head back to school, here’s the heads up on the new technology and electronics use agreements with Salem Public Schools. Starting at the end of September 2011, all students and parents will be required to read and sign an agreement that explicitly defines how and when students may make use of technology and other electronics provided to the student by the schools. Parents should have already received the general packets of information on guidelines earlier this year. Salem Superintendent Dr. Stephen Russell said plans are underway and the Salem School Administration and School Committee will make a concerted effort to share this information and enlist parental support of these guidelines during the next month. Each “…

Salem's New Superintendent Ready for First Day of School

Dr. Stephen Russell briefs School Committee on the impending opening of schools and overall impressions.

Since starting last week, Salem Superintendent Dr. Stephen Russell has been boots on the ground meeting with school officials and faculty in preparation for the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. “People have gone out of their way to help make the transition smooth, and I am thankful,” said Russell. Russell comes to Salem from Dartmouth, replacing Dr. William Cameron who left to run the Central Regional Berkshire School District.  For now, the primary focus for Russell is the opening of schools. “Ninety-nine percent of the classrooms are ready for the opening of school and we are ready to go,” said an enthusiastic Russell at Monday's School Committee meeting. Russell commended the teachers for putting in so much of their own time to …
