Swampscott High School's boys' lacrosse team battled the clock to beat Salem.
Swampscott High's boys' varsity lacrosse team notched two goals in the final seconds of play to surge past Salem 13-12 Saturday afternoon. The game, played at Bertram Field, had Swampscott trailing 12-11 with under a minute to play but they roared ahead, scoring the winning goal with just nine seconds showing on the clock. Bay Staters like Hillary Clinton and support same-sex marriage, but nothing compares to their love of Red Sox Manager John Farrell. The Sox manager recently received the lowest disapproval percentage in Public Policy Polling history – even better than Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa and Santa Claus. What a difference a year makes for the Sox. The team’s hot start has 27 percent of those who took the survey predicting a World Series. Only 3 percent said the Sox will not make the playoffs. Sixty-four percent of those surveyed said Farrell is doing a good job. Only 1 percent disapproved of Farrell’s work this year. Organizers hope they can get city permits and that the area is no longer a crime scene by Saturday.
If you were one of the runners forced to end your Marathon early because of the bombings — or someone who just wants to show solidarity — a group is working to let you go "The Last Mile" on Saturday. Organizers are using Facebook to let people know of the effort. Here's how they put it: So, as you have all heard by now, some coward likes to blow up trash cans. The Boston Athletic Association said runners may pick up their bags between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday at 130 Columbus Ave. Some runners have reported that they are also handing out medals, but the BAA could not confirm this. Just before noon, the Boston Athletic Association posted the following on its Facebook page: First, we again want to express our sympathy to all of the victims and our gratitude to the first responders of yesterday's explosions. Among the 26 Salem runners scheduled to compete in the Boston Marathon, eight finished the race before the bombings cancelled the run.
For Salem's John Young, yesterday's bombings marked the second time a disaster has prevented him from finishing one of the world's most prestigious marathons. In November, Hurricane Sandy forced New York City to cancel its marathon. Young, a math teacher at South Hamilton's Pingree School, had hoped to become the first little person to finish that marathon. Then came Monday's tragedy. Young and another little person, Juli Windsor of the South End, had sought to become the first of their stature to complete the Boston Marathon. Young, in an email to Salem Patch, said he is okay and that the race was cancelled when he was about 3/4 of a mile from the finish line. The USA Today High School Sports webpage has the Salem Witches in the running to be named the country's most unique high school mascot.
C'mon people, we can't lose to the Ashland Clockers. What's a Clocker anyways? If you haven't heard, Salem High School's athletic mascot The Salem Witches has the school in the running to be named America's Most Unique High School Mascot. Click Here to vote for Salem before Tuesday's deadline. At last check Monday morning, Salem was in second place with 42 percent of the vote. Both of Salem High School's varsity basketball teams have made their way into the state playoffs and will kick off their run to the championship this week. Boys' Varsity Basketball: Salem has a bye through the first round and will host Winchester Tuesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Girls' Varsity Basketball: The girls' varisty basketball team will hit the road to play their first playoff game against Arlington Catholic Thursday night. Spencer Bergholtz is a three sport high school athlete and is the focus of this week's Coffee with a Captain column.
Many of the athletes competing on Salem's winter high school sports teams are watching their seasons wind down, but some, like Spencer Bergholtz, are getting ready to play another sport this spring. For this week's Coffee With a Captain Salem Patch sports column, we sat down with Hamilton-Wenham High School student Spencer Bergholtz, who currently serves as the assistant captain on the combination Salem/Hamilton-Wenham hockey team. Although his senior hockey season won't end with the playoff berth he would have liked, Berholtz has amassed some pretty impressive individual stats and ended up leading the Northeastern South league in goals with 15 and is second in overall points with 26. UPDATE: Well, it was just Bill and me who even picked the Ravens, who, as we all know too well, won 28-13.
