This Week is National EMS Week (May 19-25)

What would you say to local, state and national Emergency Medical Service personnel?

This week -- May 19 to 25 -- is National EMS Week and the theme is "EMS: One Mission. One Team." In 1968, President Gerald Ford signed the first EMS Week proclamation, designating a time for the nation to celebrate the emergency medical technician paramedic as well as an opportunity to educate the public about the critical role of EMS in the community, according to EMS.gov.  May 22 has been designated as Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day, according to emsweekideas.org.  Every day our local, state and national EMS respond to crisis situations. Recently, Boston's EMS was in the spotlight because of last month's bombings; and today, Emergency Medical Service personnel in Moore, Oklahoma, are in the national spotlight as they …

Salem Residents Fuming Over Stolen, Damaged Flowers

Salem police have responded to numerous complaints regarding stolen flowers, damaged flower pots and pulled up gardens this spring.

A recent uptick in reports of stolen flower pots and damaged gardens has some city residents asking local police officers to increase their latenight foot patrols in certain Salem neighborhoods.  It was Friday evening when Leach Street resident Jessica Dusak discovered that a brazen thief had stolen a hanging flower basket and four trays of flowers off of her front porch in broad daylight. Although the fresh flowers were worth less than $40, Dusak said she was disappointed because she expected more of her neighborhood.  "Leach Street is a lovely area and the flowers had been purchased just days before," Dusak said, adding, "my neighbors and I are simply appalled at how someone would do such a thing." Then, on Sunday morning, Hawthorne …

If anyone wants advice on how to set up cheap monitoring cameras on their yards to catch these folks, I'll be happy to give a little free consulting. If you have an old computer or laptop, you can set it up to monitor who crosses your yard. If a few of us did this, we might be able to help catch these people, or even if it were known that enough of us were doing this, it would be a deterrence. I …   more ›

Nature Photographer Scolded by Salem Police

Salem police received numerous calls from motorists Saturday night reporting a man pointing an object that looked like a weapon at passing vehicles.

Salem police officers scolded an amateur photographer Saturday night after he was reportedly found pointing what looked like a weapon at passing motorists on Bridge Street. At 9:29 p.m., police responded to the area of Bridge and Webb streets after receiving numerous calls from motorists reporting a suspicious man pointing an object at passing vehicles. The unusual call came in just ten minutes after police received a report of a possible shotgun blast in the area of Jefferson Avenue. The man told police he normally uses the rig for taking wildlife photos and was simply testing out …

common sense.... he tried to hide and it was just to take pictures.... neither of which are illegal. common sense is if you believe he deserved to be sternly reprimanded which the police had no right doing.... than youre lacking some sense. allowing the cops to violate a simple civil right as this cuz they let nonsense complaints take priority over sensable responses like "its just a guy taking …   more ›

Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. There were 114 DUI fatalities in Massachusetts in 2012, which were 34 percent of traffic-related fatalities last year, according to Mothers…
