In addition to providing traditional instruction, Collins Middle School works to prepare students in grades 6-8 with the skills they need to succeed outside of school. Students and teachers are organized in units known as "wharfs" and "clusters," which provide students the opportunity to bond in smaller groups.

In addition to English, foreign languages, science and math, students receive instruction in art, music, physical education and life skills. F.E.D. Up!,  a committee comprised of members of the staff as well as the student body, is an internal organization dedicated to facilitating cooperation, kindness, responsibility and fairness in the school community. Mary Manning currently serves as principal at Collins.

Bertram Field, home of the Salem High School Witches, is located behind Collins.
