5 Things to Do in Salem This Weekend

Here are five fun things to do in Salem this weekend.

Looking to get out of the house and do something in Salem this weekend? Here are our picks for the top five things to do in the city.

1. The Jazz and Soul Festival: The 2013 Salem Jazz and Soul Festival will take place this weekend at the Salem Willows. The two-day concert will feature performances by 12 bands from the Boston area, New York and northern Vermont. The free festival will also include a music-education tent, a kids’ tent, a 21-plus beer pavilion and more than 30 artists selling hand-made goods. It will run from 11:15 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.

2. Cheer on Some Athletes: Athletes from across the North Shore will lace up to take part in the Witch City Triathlon Sunday morning. The 1/3 mile swim, 13 mile bike bike and 3.2 mile run is set in Forest River Park. The swim will take place in the bay, the bike course will head into Marblehead and athletes will cross the finish line at Forest River Park.

3. Get Your Car Washed For a Good Cause: The Salem High School Marching Band will host a car wash on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the high school. The suggested donation is $5 and proceeds will benefit the band’s annual band camp, instrument repairs and their upcoming trip to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City in March.

4Take in the Local Music Scene: There are plenty of options when it comes to live music in Salem this weekend. Click Here to read a handy break-down of the various musical acts that will be playing at venues across the city, written by Salem Patch blogger Bob Broderick.

5Violin-Powered Rock and Roll:  The Merj, a five-piece band featuring the powerful violin of Roze Tlyer-Malone, will be performing Sunday afternoon at Peabody Street Park. The concert is scheduled to run from 3 to 6 p.m.
