Help Us Highlight Salem's Volunteers

Salem Patch wants to know who goes that extra miles to give and make a difference.

Volunteerism is the great equalizer; be you employed or out of work, rich man, poor man, beggar or thief. All can give time to help an organization help others. If you volunteer, you are not alone.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 62.8 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2009 and September 2010. The “main organization” — for which the volunteer worked the most hours during the year — was most frequently religious (33.8 percent of all volunteers).

This was followed by educational or youth service related (26.5 percent) and another 13.6 percent of volunteers performed activities mainly for community service organizations.
