A “Dog Walk” is again the crux of the Festival, though the focus will be on dogs in need of forever homes. Dogs and their people will walk a self-guided tour of downtown Salem before returning to the Common for live music, meet and greet with adoptable dogs, exciting dog demos and the wildly popular 2014 Puppy Palooza Championships.

This promises to be a very special event as proceeds will support Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem.  The Club serves nearly 1000 children, keeping them challenged and engaged in activities that promote their learning and sense of community spirit. The Salem Club is the second oldest “Boys Club” in the Nation and the first to include girls. Further information about the Salem Boys & Girls Club can be found at their website: www.bgcgs.org

Formerly known as the Annual Salem Dog Walk, the name change to Festival reflects the growth expected in an already successful event.  The footprint on the Salem Common has been increased to triple the number of vendors, triple the number of rescue groups and accommodate an array of dog demonstrations.  And this year, children from Salem’s Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem will play an active role in the fundraiser by creating and producing promotion materials, handling dogs available for adoption and manning booths.

The Salem Lions Club is part of the world’s largest service organization with more than 1.4 million members dedicated to community improvement and eliminating preventable blindness. In her speech to the 1925 National Convention, Helen Keller charged the Lions to be “Knights of the Blind.”  Re-charted in 1998, the Salem Lions Club has remained committed to this mission as well as supporting many local organizations and charities with time, sweat and money.
