Happenings at the Boys & Girls Club

Happenings at the Boys & Girls Club The Boys & Girls Club is open for another school year, and there is a lot going on! We are now accepting memberships for our drop-in program each day after school at Hawthorne Boulevard, for an amazing membership fee of just $10 per year! Please stop by and check us out. We have several new faces working at The Club. Our new Athletic Director is Keith Langlais who graduated from Salem State University with a degree in Sports Fitness and Recreation. Jaime Smyth is our new Arts & Education Director, and a graduate of the Mass College of Art & Design. Katei Campbell directs our Power Hour Homework Room and Marvin Baez directs our Game Room. Nick Thelen oversees our Computer and Technology Room.  Please stop by and meet our staff.  We want to thank the Camarda Family for donating two scholarships to The Club for the Children’s Drama Program at the Marblehead Little Theatre.  The two scholarships went to Kalynda Santana and Amanda Davis.  They will be performing in a play in November at the Marblehead Little Theatre. We also have entered into a Lego League and will be competing across the state. Andy Sousa is our volunteer director along with Chuck Von Bruns. This promises to be a great program. Our mentor’s basketball league just finished hosting their championship game two weeks ago with Andre Daley, our Teen director, coaching the championship team. Members of that team included:  Bryan Martinez, Ricky Arias, Jhonel Roberts, Yafell Maldonado, Alex Sanchez and Luandry Canela.  Our Golf Program teens recently attended a banquet at the Ferncroft Country Club where they participated in a golf program and also got to meet Bruins Goalie Tuukka Rask.  Thank you to volunteer Greg Richard who directed our Golf Program. Our Club will be honoring long time Principal of the Collins Middle School, Mary Manning, on Sunday, October 6.  Mary is a current Board Member for The Club and has been a true champion for Salem families and the Community. She is being recognized in our Champions for Kids Celebration program.  For more information on the celebration, please check out our website at http://www.bgcgs.org/Mary  Aaron Zev Katz of the musical group The Dejas will drumming for 30 straight hours in an attempt to break a world record on Saturday, September 28. Drumming starts at 10 am at Wynott’s Wands to benefit the Boys & Girls Club music program where Aaron and Callie Lipton teach music to our kids. To donate to Aaron’s world record Drum-a-thon, go to http://www.bgcgs.org/give/drum-a-thon/ .
