Council Green Lights Land Sale Linked to $45M Downtown Development

Salem city councilors unanimously approved the sale of a half-acre parcel near the intersection of Washington and Dodge streets.

A proposed $45 million downtown Salem development took a major step forward Thursday night when city councilors unanimously approved the abandonment and sale of a small parcel of land at the intersection of Washington and Dodge streets.

Councilors unanimously approved the sale of the city-owned parcel to RCG, a Somerville-based developer looking to erect a five or six-story building at the intersection that is expected to include a hotel, restaurant and assorted residential and commercial spaces.

The parcel abandoned and sold Thursday night will allow RCG to bring the entrance to the building right up to the sidewalk.

Prior to the vote, a handful of city residents took turns at the podium, some voicing concerns regarding the availability of parking and population density in downtown Salem.

Salem Patch will keep you posted as RCG representatives continue to schedule public hearings and  apply for permits associated with the project - which is expected to wrap up sometime in 2016.
