Consider Yourself Warned: Canal Street Repaving Project

A repaving project will likely translate to delays on Canal Street in Salem.

The city of Salem will begin repaving on a portion of Canal Street, according to a recent post on the Building Salem Facebook page.

"This repaving will not address the settlement of the road; rather, it will improve the “ride-ability” of Canal Street. The settlement of the road will be corrected by the roadway reconstruction project, which is expected to start either later this fall, or in the spring of 2015," the post read.

According to the post, crews from the DeFelice Construction Co., of Dracut, will be on Canal Street today to adjust the water and gas valve boxes in anticipation of the repaving.

On Wednesday, the Forrest and Roslyn Street ends of the paving area will have terminus paving key-ways ground into the pavement. Overlay pavement will then be installed in the area, most likely starting on Friday, due to the large amount of rain forecasted for Thursday of this week. If necessary due to poor weather expected on Wednesday and Thursday, DeFelice may finish the paving this Saturday, or early next week. DeFelice will also be addressing pavement conditions in their excavation areas, from Roslyn to Mill Street.

Once this process starts, there will be raised water and gas boxes in the street and caution should be used driving around them.

Residents and businesses along Canal Street will always have access to and from your driveway or parking lot within a few minutes of pavement installation. Police details will be present to assist residents and customers through the work zone and to facilitate traffic management.
