Wallace Held on $1 Million Bail in Infirmary Shooting

UPDATE, 6 p.m.: A press release from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office Tuesday said the $1 million bail for Wallace was requested by Assistant District Attorney Lynn Feigenbaum of the DA’s Senior Trial Team.

In the release, the DA's office offered more details about the alleged July 31 incident at the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. 

Wallace had been taken there by two Middlesex Sheriff's Office deputies to be treated for an eye injury he'd sustained in a jail altercation as an Essex County pretrial detainee.

When Wallace was allowed to use a restroom at the infirmary, his handcuffs were removed but his leg restraints stayed in place. While in the restroom, prosecutors said Wallace was able to free himself from restraints and pushed a deputy against a wall as he broke for the emergency room exit.

When the other deputy tried to stop Wallace, prosecutors said Wallace was able to gain control of the deputy's gun, shooting the deputy in the leg.

The uninjured deputy then commanded Wallace to stop and put down the firearm. Prosecutors said that when Wallace refused, the uninjured deputy fired on Wallace, striking him three times before releasing the weapon.

Prosecutors said Wallace is expected to appear in Boston Municipal Court next on Sept. 4. 

ORIGINAL STORY: Raymond Wallace, the Marblehead man accused of shooting a deputy with his own gun at Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary July 31, was arraigned from his hospital room Massachusetts General Hospital Tuesday.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, Wallace is being held on $1 million bail after the arraignment.

Wallace is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a public employee, and escape, according to a Boston Municipal Court complaint.

Wallace, 36, while in the custody of two Middlesex County deputy sheriffs, allegedly tried to take possession of one of the deputy's service weapons while detained on Essex County offenses Wednesday.

Regular readers of Salem Patch might recognize Wallace. He is accused of donning a mask like this ones from the movie "The Town" and robbing the PetsMart on Highland Avenue, then setting his get-away car on fire. He's also suspected in a hold-up of the now-closed Borders Books just over the Salem line in Peabody.

Members of the Salem PD will certainly recognize him. Several officers received commendations for capturing him after the PetsMart robbery. Authorities also say they found a cache of weapons linked to Wallace in a pair of speakers that wound up in North Andover after a trash company cleaned out Wallace's former Courageous Court apartment.
