35 Displaced Following Two-Alarm Salem Fire
A two-alarm fire broke out in an apartment building on Dow Street in Salem early Tuesday morning.
Salem firefighters knocked down a two-alarm fire that broke out on the exterior of an apartment building on Dow Street early Tuesday morning.
At 1:15 a.m., Salem firefighters responding to an alarm at 52-60 Dow Street found heavy fire on the exterior of of the four-story apartment building.
Through heavy smoke, local firefighters led some 70 tenants from the building and rescued two fourth-floor residents using a ladder, a fire official said.
Fire officials said Tuesday morning that 35 tenants of the building are displaced as a result of the fire. Half of the large building is still habitable and some tenants have already been allowed to return.
The Salem Council on Aging has set up a temporary shelter for this displaced at the Senior Center on Broad Street.
Members of the Peabody, Beverly, Swampscott, Lynn and Marblehead fire departments assisted.
Fire officials are still investigating what sparked the blaze.
