This city is turning into Lynn...makes me want to move to Maine! Seems its creeping higher north each year.
Leigh E July 26, 2012 at 07:50 PM
Ah of course the good old point. Welfare apparently buys lots of crack....and machete's for all the illegals
john July 26, 2012 at 08:01 PM
Low income housing on the corner of Harbor St. will turn the point on it's head. The police log in Salem from day to day is unreal.Needles, drunks, homeless, stabbings, robberies, catalytic converter theft, domestic assault and on and on.Everyday.

Nice work by the Salem PD! Thanks for all you do to keep up with the goings on there and your work to keep us safe.
frank linskey July 26, 2012 at 08:25 PM
I thank the mayor for all the riff raff...
Kelly Spangler July 26, 2012 at 08:33 PM
They need to put a handle on the Point before it CREEPS to the rest of the city.
Diane H July 26, 2012 at 10:34 PM
it's clear that you feel strongly about this but really???? Clean it up sweetie! This is a family show and no need for the language. Just sayin'
Roberta Conners July 26, 2012 at 11:57 PM
And now Kim Driscoll wants to expand the point and make it more appealing to low income families making our city a low class place to live! Raising more crime around our families! Shame on the city committee, they are driving us out of here!
Roberta Conners July 27, 2012 at 12:12 AM
BTW... Kim Driscoll agreed to make Salem a "gateway" city, theres a private trust that allows all these new high rise low income houses to be built, She is planning on increasing the population of Salem from 40,000 to 60,000!
john July 27, 2012 at 12:14 AM
The point is expanding with St Joes low income housing and Salem Oil and Grease will also be low income. This is in addition to Pope St,First St and Loring Towers which will spread the problem all over the city.Deeds of destruction.

I'd be very interested in knowing more about a private trust. I've not heard that. What I DO know is that the city goes after HUD money and grants every year, every dime dedicated to low income housing. It's over a $1,000,000 a year. I always wondered how and why we get/got slammed with so much low income housing, and the exorbitant costs to the taxpayer for services. Can we say SPED? Not to mention how much crime seems to have gone up. See the FY '13 :HUD goodies here. You don't have to read too far, or even too much, to get the picture. http://www.salem.com/pages/salemma_dpcd/studiesreports/fy13actionplan.pdf What say we flood the public hearings next year, and tell them, NO MORE? I do believe the council has to pass on this, too. We get the government (read, elected officials) we deserve. I will vote for the homeless guy, if he runs again, before I'll vote for Driscoll. I am dead serious.

Driscoll has much bigger aspirations than being the mayor of our little city. Some say a judgeship. Her kids are still in school, though, so she’s biding her time. Meanwhile, she’s racking up brownie points for the resume she wants to present to her limo liberal leaders. She’s doing it on OUR backs. Oh, she’s got more big plans, and we taxpayers are only a means to an end. HER end. HER big job. She is ruining this city. Forget turning us into Lynn. She wants to turn us into Lawrence. Think about this: The more housing you have, potentially, the lower your percentage of 40B housing goes; and therefore, the more justification for more low income housing. Also recall that she’s a real estate attorney. I’ve always poo-poo’d that angle, but I’m rapidly losing faith. She’s got connections in that arena. Latest on the grapevine – and I cannot *imagine* this is true – is that she (“the city”) wants to put low income housing at the site of the Howard St cemetery. No, you’re not seeing things. It’s beyond belief, IMHO; but a friend of a friend lives in that ‘hood, and said they were having a meeting about it at 4pm today. Haha, don’t quote me! Caveat: Grapevine! Aubrey, dig in!

How in the name of God can Joan Lovely run for State Senate with the horrible track record that is the city of Salem under her watch! Crime, crime and more crime. Nothing but taxes, taxes and more taxes. A 9 per cent increase in the water rates last week, 4 per cent increase in the sewer bill, 25 per cent increase in parking fines July 2. Over 1,000 free parking spaces taken away July 2-city forces public to spend $300 a year for a parking tag that does not even guarantee a parking space. Then the last straw-the July 2nd approval of an INTERNET SALES tax resolution with Lovley casting the DECIDING VOTE-and saying she will do everything she can to get the legislature to approve it. Salem is the ONLY city or town in the country with its own internet sales tax! Is it any surprise that this state has lost a congressional seat? Thats because over 600,000 people have moved OUT of this state over the last 10 years-to much more affordable & peaceful places, like North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. People of Salem WAKE UP. Say NO to Joan Lovely, say NO to Kim Driscoll. Vote Edward Carroll for State Senate. He's pro Police, anti crime, pro jobs, against taxes and big government and the only non lawyer in the race. LOVELY and DRISCOLL have to go and the EVIL JASON "1 job in Salem 1 job in Beverly" SILVA makes 3. What a DISRACEFUL CREW RUNNING SALEM! The last one here turn out the lights-its all OVER here in Mass. Hey Audrey please do a story about what a mess Salem has become!

If I may paraphrase a LBJ quote...""That's it. If I've lost Americus Bell I've lost middle America." A machette?????????
christine July 27, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Going after Hud money is like taking that job for $2.00 more an HR with no benefits, rather then the nice Government job with great benefits earning $80.00 a week less, Marblehead, Essex, Hamilton, Wenham, don't do it why do we?
Americus Bell July 27, 2012 at 03:08 PM
I think I may have stumbled upon the trust. As of July '11, the only funds in it were repayments of a $24k loan they gave to HAWC for its new shelter. So it's basically "broke". Thankfully. http://salem.com/pages/salemma_dpcd/trust2011ar.pdf

Excellent question. One that all taxpayers should be asking of all our gov't officials! There's a five year plan that commenced in 2010 regarding all this, so fasten your seatbelts - OR, undo them and get in the council's face early next year when the HUD application comes up again. Here's the plan. http://www.salem.com/pages/salemma_dpcd/studiesreports/conplan2010.pdf Here's the city's reports page, from whence it comes. Page down and look for the plethora of reports under Community Development Block Grant. http://www.salem.com/Pages/SalemMA_DPCD/studies Oh, I've gotta close that tab! Too many things... Like: who's minding the SESD store? Why can't we see their financials (they don't even have a web page!), given that so much (all?) of their costs get passed through to us via municipal assessments? Aaaack.

I get federal/state help and I also WORK. Imagine that,.work. What a concept. So basically I am paying taxes to get help. Imagine that. Also, I dont use drugs or cause harm to anyone around me. WOW, a person that actually needs help. Heres the thing, I WAITED 7 years for assistance. I see people in low income areas driving Lexus and having iPhones and wearing the best clothing. HOW does this happen? I would like the tip.Anyway, Its not so much the low income part, its the ignorance that gets me going. The "gangs" forming in this city get me going. A lot of times these people dont live here! They come here to start fights or to CREATE a space out of there out city . Lets STOP gang violence and the littering that has overwhelmed this city! It gets me heated to see trash all over the streets in that area and now downtown. Philly has cleaner streets!
Bill July 27, 2012 at 04:41 PM
prediction - she leaves office and cashes in for a few years as a developer/lawyer makes a bundle based on connections and then runs for Congress or Gov. Typical liberal track.
woot July 27, 2012 at 05:39 PM
nothing like a point story to bring out all the rascist remarks. old white repubs going nuts. go figure. i wonder if the point was a majority white neighborhood, would these people be all up in arms....

I wasn't calling you a commie. You just reminded me of Lenin's " Useful Idiots of the West' quote. Lenin had you in mind.

If it commanded the attention of the cops as it does now, the answer would be yes.
