Impatient Salem Library Patron Burns Sage to 'Calm Himself'

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 

Tuesday, July 9

  • At 4:58 p.m., police responded to a report of a man urinating near the intersection of New Derby and Washington streets. An unidentified man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 5:20 p.m., police received word that a man had fallen off of a skateboard while trying to avoid a motor vehicle on Clifton Avenue. The man refused medical attention.
  • At 8:24 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant near the intersection of Bridge and Burnside streets. Timothy A. Robertson, 24, of 24 Norman St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 9:18 p.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint on Grove Street.
  • At 10:21 p.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint on Harris Street.
  • At 11:14 p.m., police made an arrest on Wisteria Street. Meghyn Surels Aghahowa, 32, of 10 Wisteria St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.

Wednesday, July 10

  • At 1:10 a.m., police responded to a report of people arguing in the street.
  • At 8:51 a.m., police responded to a report of a man burning sage behind the library on Essex Street. The man told police he was just burning sage to calm himself while he was waiting for the library to open. The man was advised that there had been problems in the area and was moved along. 
  • At 9:00 a.m., police responded to a report of a person living in a tent behind a home on Watson Street. The homeowner agreed to have their friend move out of the tent they were living in.
  • At 9:53 a.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Highland Avenue.
  • At 10:14 a.m., police responded to a report of a man sleeping on a bench on Central Street.
  • At 10:35 a.m., police responded to a report of a pit bull off of its leash on Essex Street. The owner was issued a $75 fine for failing to license their dog. 
  • At 11:18 a.m., police assisted Peabody police with an alleged car-jacking suspect who was leading area police on a car chase through the city. Rosa Maria Guarino, 31, of 20 Crane Ave., Peabody, was arrested on charges of failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, receiving a stolen vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs.   • At 12:11 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious man on Belleau Road.
  • At 12:27 p.m., police responded to a report of a man sleeping on a bench near the intersection of New Derby Street and Klop Alley.
  • At 12:44 p.m., a Parlee Street woman called police to report that three solar lights were stolen from her front lawn sometime overnight.
  • At 12:52 p.m., police responded to a report of a woman walking around in pajamas on Lafayette Street. Police were unable to locate the woman.
  • At 1:15 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant on Lafayette Street. Carlos X. Torres, 28, of 53 Dungeon Ave., Lynn, was arrested for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.
  • At 2:43 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant near the intersection of Loring Avenue and Raymond Road. Jamie Candelaria Jr., 30, of 39 Railroad Ave., Beverly, was arrested for reportedly having a five outstanding warrants.
  • At 2:47 p.m., police responded to a report of drug activity near the intersection of Mason and Tremont streets. A man will be summonsed on a charge of illegal possession of a class D substance (marijuana).
  • At 3:32 p.m., a woman called police to report that she was struck in the leg by a motor vehicle on Hancock Street. The woman said the man driving the car fled the scene.
Other arrest:

Walaeldin M. Baraka, 33, of 1 Buffum St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
