Salem Police Respond to People Selling 'God's Water'

The following information was submitted by the Salem Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.


The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Saturday, Aug. 24


  • At 12:01 a.m., police responded to a disturbance on Perkins Street.
  • At 12:28 a.m., police responded to a loud house party on Lafayette Street. 
  • At 12:55 a.m., police responded to a disturbance outside of a restaurant on Washington Street.
  • At 1:24 a.m., police responded to a report of people fishing from a dock on Kernwood Street. The men were advised that fishing isn't allowed after 10 p.m. and were moved along.
  • At 2:33 a.m., police responded to a domestic assault and battery on Loring Avenue.
  • At 4:28 a.m., a man called police to report that two men mugged him and threw him into the harbor. The man was taken to the emergency room where he changed his statement and told police he fell into the harbor while urinating and made up the story because he was embarrassed.   • At 7:25 a.m., a woman turned over an iPad she found in the middle of the street on Bridge Street. Police later tracked down the owner, who admitted to leaving the iPad on top of his car.
  • At 8:03 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Cedar Road.
  • At 8:16 a.m., a Norman Street resident called police to report that there was a squirrel loose in their apartment. The squirrel was removed from the apartment.
  • At 8:23 a.m., police responded to a dispute between a landlord and tenant on Hancock Street. After an investigation, officers determined that the home may be an illegal rooming house run by the homeowner. The Community Impact Unit was notified.
  • At 9:48 a.m., police responded to a report of a woman causing a disturbance at the Target on Highland Avenue. The woman was moved along.
  • At 10:12 a.m., police responded to a report of the same woman causing a disturbance at the Target on Highland Avenue. Christine Hamilton, 46, of 10 First St., Salem, was arrested on charges of disturbing the peace and trespassing. 
  • At 10:33 a.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Goodell Street and stole a GPS device and $5 in change.
  • At 10:33 a.m., police responded to a vehicle break-in on North Street.
  • At 11:42 a.m., police responded to a report of a man walking in the middle of the road on Bridge Street.
  • At 2:13 p.m., police responded to a report of a man sleeping near the intersection of New Derby Street and Klop Alley.
  • At 2:43 p.m., police responded to a past assault on Essex Street.
  • At 5:33 p.m., police and fire units responded to a report of a child locked inside of a motor vehicle near Salem Common. The car was eventually opened by local firefighters and the child was unharmed.
  • At 10:35 p.m., a Belleau Road resident called police to report that she was getting brown tap water at her house.
Sunday, Aug. 25
  • At 12:26 a.m., police responded to a report of a woman passed out in a motor vehicle on East India Square. The woman was placed into protective custody.
  • At 12:28 a.m., police responded to a past break-in on Bridge Street.
  • At 3:18 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Symonds Street. Michael P. Carr, 32, of 21 Symonds St., Salem, was arrested on charges of assault and three counts of malicious destruction of property valued above $250.
  • At 9:15 a.m., a motorist was arrested by Salem State University police. Mariola Perez-Esteban, 26, of 14 Shore Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
  • At 9:51 a.m., a woman on Flint Street called police to report that her vehicle was broken into.
  • At 10:37 a.m., police responded to a report dog bite near the intersection of Broad and Phelps streets.
  • At 12:57 p.m., police responded to a report of people selling "God's water" near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Jackson Street. The people were told to stop and advised as to how to get proper permits and permission to solicit from City Hall.
  • At 3:08 p.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Green Street.
