Man Charged With Assault by Knife After Car Chase

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 

Sunday, July 7

  • At 4:50 p.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered on Scenic Place.
  • At 5:09 p.m., police responded to a report of fresh vandalism on a door on Ropes Street.
  • At 7:03 p.m., police responded to a report of a rabid skunk on Bridge Street.
  • At 8:03 p.m., police received word that kids were diving off of the pier at Salem Willows Park.
  • At 8:44 p.m., police responded to a report of a man drinking near the scoreboard at a youth baseball game. Steven M. Picard, 29, of 13 Balcolmb St., Salem, was arrested on charges of drinking in public and disorderly conduct.
  • At 8:45 p.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint on Cherry Hill Avenue.
  • At 9:10 p.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint on Foster Street.
  • At 10:29 p.m., police responded to a reported assault with a knife on Dow Street. A woman told police a man assaulted her with a knife before jumping into a pickup trick and driving up Dow Street the wrong. After a brief pursuit, the vehicle was pulled over. David A. Cook, 49, of 6 Southern Manor, Ipswich, was arrested on charges of failure to stop for police and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (knife).
  • At 11:23 p.m., police responded to a report of an injured cat on Traders Way. The cat was brought back to the station and eventually brought to an animal hospital.


Monday, July 8


  • At 1:51 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Boston Street. Frank R. Mejia Jr., 17, of 106 Boston St., Salem, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
  • At 6:13 a.m., police received word that a large tree branch had fallen on a vehicle on Palmer Street.
  • At 8:24 a.m., a Cabot Street woman entered the police station to report that her vintage three-wheel bicycle was stolen from the common area of her building.
  • At 8:33 a.m., police stopped a motor vehicle on Highland Avenue. Rodney A. Marrero, 24, of 19 Meadowbank Ave., Mattapan, was arrested on charges of attaching false plates to a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license, second offense.
  • At 8:59 a.m., police responded to a report of stolen scrap metal on Derby Street.
  • At 11:24 a.m., police responded to a road rage incident on Endicott Avenue.
  • At 11:41 a.m., police responded to a report of an abandoned baby bag on Washington Street.
  • At 1:03 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious man on Cain Road.
  • At 2:38 p.m., a local resident called police to report that his iPod was stolen while he was in class at Salem High School.
Other arrests:

Katherine V. Reyes, 34, of 391 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, was arrested on a charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. 

Daniel W. Wright Jr., 21, of 344 Essex St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of possessing a class A substance.

Gina M. Wright, 26, of 20 Jordan St., Beverly, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle with an expired inspection sticker and possessing a class A substance.
