Drag Racers Arrested After Pursuit on Highland Avenue

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:

Tuesday, April 29:

  • At 4:01 p.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Valley Street.
  • At 5:08 p.m., police responded to a report of a large bag in the roadway on Swampscott Road.
  • At 5:38 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Lynde Street.
  • At 5:54 p.m., police made a juvenile arrest on Norman Street.
  • At 6:30 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Hartford Street.
  • At 6:48 p.m., police made an arrest on Margin Street. Matthew C. Roach, 28, of 50R Jefferson Ave., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.
  • At 6:51 p.m., police stopped a motor vehicle near the intersection of Margin and Endicott streets. William J. Josselin Jr., 33, of 7 Harris St., Beverly, was arrested on charges of illegally possessing a class A substance (heroin), subsequent offense, illegally possessing a class B substance (Methadone) subsequent offense and violating the city's knife ordinance.
  • At 8:01 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on North Street.
  • At 8:36 p.m., police responded to a past assault on Northend Avenue. A warrant will be sought in Salem District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot) and assault and battery.
  • At 9:16 p.m., police responded to a reported larceny on Pioneer Terrace.
  • At 11:09 p.m., police responded to an alarm on Bridge Street.
  • At 11:38 p.m., police responded to an alarm on Highland Avenue.

Wednesday, April 30:

  • At 1:13 a.m., police responded to a report of two vehicles refusing to stop on Highland Avenue. Two drag racers were reportedly clocked going 80 in a 30 mph zone. Justin Borden, 24, of 3 Clark Ave., Salem, was arrested on charges of drag racing, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police and speeding. Anthony R. Occhipinti, 24, of 29 Barnes Road, Salem, was arrested on charges of drag racing, failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and speeding.
  • At 2:08 a.m., police made an arrest near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Clark Street. Charndra E. Morency, 25, of 3 Clark Ave., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.
  • At 3:06 a.m., police conducted a well-being check on Highland Avenue.
  • At 9:12 a.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Ord Street.
  • At 11:04 a.m., police responded to the Market Basket on Highland Avenue after a customer reportedly passed a counterfeit $50.
  • At 11:37 a.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on South Street.
  • At 12:28 p.m., police responded to a possible assault of a security guard at the North Shore Medical Center on Highland Avenue. A warrant will be issued on charges of assault and battery in a senior citizen, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property valued above $250 and assault and battery in a healthcare worker.
  • At 1:08 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on Boston Street. Christopher Evans, 45, of 14 Waverly St., Everett, was arrested for reportedly having two outstanding warrants and for reportedly drinking in public.
  • At 2:38 p.m., police responded to a reported power outage near the intersection of Derby and Congress streets.
  • At 2:57 p.m., a Pioneer Terrace resident called police to report being attacked by a dog earlier in the day.
  • At 3:34 p.m., police responded to a past hit-and-run motor vehicle accident on Lafayette Street.
  • At 3:54 p.m., police made an arrest on Lafayette Street.

    Other Arrest

    Thomas J. Hartigan, 45, of 7 Collins St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
