Rabid Cat Reported on Orchard Street

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Saturday, Oct. 12


  • At 3:44 p.m., police responded to a report of a person who lost their tour group near the intersection of Essex and Washington streets.
  • At 3:52 p.m., police responded to a medical overdose on Palmer Street.
  • At 5:35 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious brown bag on Essex Street.
  • At 5:45 p.m., police stopped a motor vehicle near the intersection of Bridge and Washington streets. The driver will be summonsed to court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
  • At 6:44 p.m., the DPW was notified about a sinkhole forming near the intersection of Washington and Harbor streets.
  • At 7:19 p.m., a Prince Street resident called police to report that a boy was jumped by two other boys earlier in the day.
  • At 8:04 p.m., a woman entered the police station to report that her wristlet was stolen at Murphy's sometime Friday night. The woman said she traced her phone to Medford and had contacted the Medford Police Department.
  • At 8:36 p.m., police responded to a report of damage to the swing-set at the Salem Common playground.
  • At 9:50 p.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in near the intersection of Congress and Ward streets.
  • At 10:30 p.m., police responded to a loud house party on Palmer Street.
  • At 11:06 p.m., police responded to a report of an injured animal on Highland Avenue. Police determined the animal was a small coyote and it was moved out of the roadway.

Sunday, Oct. 13

  • At 1:17 a.m., police responded to a report of a drunk man walking down the street near the intersection of Lafayette and Dow streets. The man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 2:14 a.m., police responded to a loud party on Palmer Street.
  • At 3:10 a.m., police responded to a road rage incident at Traders Way.
  • At 5:44 a.m., a Lafayette Street resident called police to report that someone stole their medication.
  • At 9:49 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Prince and Harbor streets. A man who reportedly fell off of a motorcycle will be issued a summons on a charge of operating a motor vehicle outside of their class. 
  • At 1:02 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Symonds Street.
  • At 1:05 p.m., a Boston Street man called police to report that someone stole two scarecrows off of his front lawn overnight.
  • At 3:21 p.m., police responded to a report of a man yelling on Harbor Street.
  • At 3:30 p.m., police responded to a medical overdose on First Street.
  • At 4:03 p.m., police responded to a past sexual assault on Highland Avenue.
  • At 4:22 p.m., a resident entered the police station to turn over a wallet discovered in a parking lot on Highland Avenue. The wallet was returned to its owner.
  • At 4:27 p.m., police conducted a well-being check near the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and Charter Street.
  • At 5:05 p.m., police responded to a report of a possibly rabid cat on Orchard Street. The animal was removed.
