Woman Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Sunday, Aug. 25

  • At 4:07 p.m., police responded to a past robbery with a knife on Palmer Street.
  • At 5:32 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on Essex Street.
  • At 5:38 p.m., police checked the area near Fort Avenue for a campsite.
  • At 5:39 p.m., a man called police to report that someone broke into his car overnight while it was parked at the intersection of Essex and Daniels streets.
  • At 5:45 p.m., police responded to a dispute over a kitten on Phillips Street. 
  • At 5:47 p.m., police responded to a past break-in on Bridge Street.
  • At 7:40 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Heritage Drive.
  • At 9:12 p.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Lee Street. A neighbor told police she saw two young men near the vehicle who fled the area when the car alarm came on. The driver's side window was found smashed out.
  • At 10:50 p.m., police responded to a report of a strange man standing in a yard on Arbella Street. Officers were unable to locate the man.

Monday, Aug. 26

  • At 2:59 a.m., police responded to an attempted break-in on Turner Street. A woman told police she heard the sliding glass door open in her roommates room and found it open when she checked. Officers were unable to find anyone suspicious in the area.
  • At 5:21 a.m., police responded to a dispute on Margin Street.
  • At 6:42 a.m., a Buffum Street Extension resident called police to report finding a child's backpack in front of their house. The bag was placed into property.
  • At 8:39 a.m., police responded to three past vehicle break-ins on Columbus Avenue. All three vehicles were reportedly left unlocked.
  • At 9:58 a.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Bay View Avenue. The vehicle was reportedly left unlocked.
  • At 12:03 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Linden Street and Ocean Avenue. A woman reportedly rear-ended the vehicle in front of her and then fled the scene on foot. Barbara Hill will be summonsed on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.
  • At 12:37 p.m., a man entered the police station to report that his vehicle was broken into overnight while parked on Columbus Avenue. 
  • At 12:44 p.m., police responded to a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Liberty Hill Avenue and Appleton Street. A woman told police she was rear-ended by a woman in a beige sedan who fled the scene. The alleged victim was transported to Salem Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the accident.
  • At 12:50 p.m., police responded to a domestic assault and battery on Chestnut Street. Hugh Kerr, 61, of 4 Chestnut St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of domestic assault and battery.
  • At 1:04 p.m., police responded to a past domestic dispute on Charter Street.
  • At 4:50 p.m., police responded to a dispute between neighbors on Salem Street. Jared K. Morrison, 18, of 31 Salem St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 5:26 p.m., police responded to a report of a drunk man walking near the intersection of Grove Street and Harmony Grove Road. The man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 5:55 p.m., police reportedly noticed suspicious activity on Lafayette Street. John M. Curley, 27, of 14 Shore Ave., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 6:36 p.m., police responded to a report of a truck smeared with peanut butter on Heritage Drive.
  • At 6:57 p.m., police checked the area of Mack Park for people living in tents in the woods.
