Police: Man Arrested After Huffing in Salem Walmart

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Monday, Nov. 4


  • At 2:35 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Highland Avenue.
  • At 6:34 p.m., police responded to a medical emergency at the Walmart on Highland Avenue. When officers arrived they reportedly found a man sitting on the floor in the electronics department with his legs crossed and his head down. Officers determined he had been huffing from an air duster. Steven J. Hachey, 47, of 419 Central St., Saugus, was arrested on charges of huffing toxic vapors and shoplifting merchandise by asportation.
  • At 7:00 p.m., a Forest Avenue resident called police to report that he confronted two people who tried to steal three five-gallon water jugs off of his rear porch. They reportedly left the area and police were unable to locate them.
  • At 8:02 p.m., police stopped a motor vehicle near the intersection of North and Lynde streets. Jennifer L. McHeffey, 38, of 17 Orchard St., Salem, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and providing a false name to police.
  • At 9:40 p.m., a juvenile was arrested on Winter Island Road.

Tuesday, Nov. 5


  • At 3:55 a.m., police responded to a report of loud music coming from a motor vehicle on Lafayette Street. Miguel A. Acosta-Zapata, 38, of 50 Winnerpurkit St., Lynn, was arrested on charges of failure to stop for police, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
  • At 7:38 a.m., police responded to a report of a dog stuck under a car near the intersection of Canal and St. Paul streets. The dog was eventually freed.
  • At 8:51 a.m., police conducted a well-being check on Lafayette Street.
  • At 11:47 a.m., police responded to a report of kids throwing rocks on Grove Street.
  • At 12:29 p.m., police responded to a report of an abandoned gas can on Washington Street.
  • At 2:03 p.m., Chief Paul Tucker reportedly noticed suspicious activity in the Crosby's Marketplace parking lot on Canal Street. Sean B. Bell, 34, of 115 Collins St., Lynn, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and for reportedly having four outstanding warrants.
  • At 3:36 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on First Street.
