Guinea Pig Found in Recycling Bin at Salem Church

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:

Monday, Sept. 23

  • At 3:56 p.m., police responded to a medical overdose on Mason Street.
  • At 4:44 p.m., police responded to a report of a coyote in a backyard on Cherry Hill Avenue.
  • At 4:58 p.m., police responded to a report of a group behind the Starbucks on Washington Street. A man located with a shopping cart filled with metal was placed into protective custody.
  • At 5:35 p.m., police responded to a past assault on Mason Street. A juvenile will be summonsed to court on a charge of malicious destruction of property valued above $250.
  • At 6:05 p.m., police received word that a telephone pole near the intersection of North Street and Garden Terrace was leaning toward the street. National Grid responded and corrected the situation.
  • At 6:55 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Fort Avenue.
  • At 7:21 p.m., police responded to a report of an injured animal in the roadway near the intersection of Bridge and Lynn streets.
  • At 7:45 p.m., police responded to a possible structure fire on Settlers Way. Firefighters determined that there was no fire and it was just an issue with the fireplace.
  • At 8:37 p.m., police responded to a possible break-in on Lafayette Street.
  • At 9:03 p.m., police responded to Walyos Market on Essex Street after receiving word that a flag had been stolen off of the side of the building. A man was placed into protective custody and will be summonsed to court on a charge of malicious destruction of property under $250. 
  • At 9:55 p.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Washington Square South. A woman told her police her unlocked vehicle was broken into and her purse was stolen.
  • At 10:41 p.m., police responded to a noise complaint on Highland Avenue.
  • At 10:50 p.m., police responded to a report of three men dressed in dark clothing entering motor vehicles on Ocean Avenue. Three juveniles were arrested on charges of breaking and entering during the nighttime to commit a felony and receiving stolen property valued above $250.


Tuesday, Sept. 24

  • At 12:34 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Scenic Place. A man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 12:59 a.m., police responded to a loud group on Harris Street.
  • At 1:11 a.m., police responded to a report of suspicious people with a stretcher on Proctor Street.
  • At 5:44 a.m., a man entered the police station to report that he found a guinea pig in the paper recycling container at St. James Church. The guinea pig was described as being white, with a black spot on its rear end, dark brown around its eyes and a light brown spot on its left ear. The animal control officer reportedly picked up the guinea pig at the station. 
  • At 6:34 a.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Hathorne Street.
  • At 8:38 a.m., police and fire units responded to a vehicle fire on Lafayette Street. A burning van was extinguished by local firefighters.
  • At 9:08 a.m., a Loring Avenue woman called police to report that someone smashed one of the rear windows on her car overnight. After reviewing surveillance video, police decided to summons one of the woman's neighbors to court on a charge of malicious destruction of property valued above $250.
  • At 9:45 a.m., police responded to a dispute on Naumkeag Street.
  • At 12:22 p.m., the business manager for Salem Public Schools called police to report that two batteries had been stolen from a school bus.
  • At 1:17 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Jackson Street.
  • At 3:30 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Derby Square.
  • At 4:07 p.m., police responded to a report of malicious damage to buildings on Rainbow Terrace.
  • At 4:17 p.m., police responded to a dispute between roommates on Ward Street.
  • At 4:52 p.m., police responded to a report of a cat struck by a motor vehicle near the intersection of North and School streets.
  • At 4:53 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious group in the Broad Street Cemetery.
