Police: Expert Called to Seal Spotting on Salem Beach

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Friday, Aug. 16

  • At 5:36 p.m., police responded to a report of an unleashed dog near the intersection of Commercial Street and Leslie's Retreat Walkway.
  • At 6:40 p.m., police responded to a report of a man looking into cars on Peabody Street. A man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 7:25 p.m., police responded to a report of an unleashed dog on Grove Street.
  • At 7:32 p.m., police responded to a report of a drunk driver near the intersection of Derby and Blaney streets. Peter A. Sholds, 51, of 47 Essex St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, second offense.
  • At 8:30 p.m., police made an arrest on Lafayette Street. Christopher M. Manzi, 41, of 30 Franklin St., Lynn, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 9:22 p.m., police responded to a reported domestic assault and battery at Salem Common.
  • At 10:31 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant on Lafayette Street. Brad M. West, 17, of 99 North St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.

Saturday, Aug. 17

  • At 1:15 a.m., police responded to a past larceny on Linden Street.
  • At 2:52 a.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Norman Street.
  • At 3:01 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Grove Street.
  • At 12:37 p.m., a Highland Avenue woman called police to report that someone broke into her apartment and stole a safe.
  • At 12:56 p.m., police responded to a report of a seal on the beach on Fort Avenue. The New England Aquarium was notified and someone was sent down to look at the seal.
  • At 3:33 p.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered on Salem Street.
  • At 4:07 p.m., a woman entered the police station to report that her 5-year-old daughter was bit on the hand by a dog at the Salem Willows. The woman said her daughter attempted to pet a poodle that was being pushed in a carriage.
  • At 6:06 p.m., police responded to a report of an aggressive panhandler on Essex Street.
  • At 6:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a man passed out in a driveway on Essex Street. The man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 6:45 p.m., police responded to a boating incident near the train bridge on Bridge Street. The Harbor Master was notified.
  • At 7:04 p.m., police responded to a report of people drinking in the Broad Street Cemetery. Judith L. Carpenter, 35, of 356 Jefferson Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of drinking in public. Ralph E. Sciarretta, 43, of 17 Tracey St., Peabody, was arrested on a charge of drinking in public and for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 8:40 p.m., police responded to a report of a woman snatching someone's phone off of a table near the intersection of Lafayette and Derby streets. Katherine Y. Clary, 27, of 116 Lafayette St., Salem, was arrested on charges of assault and battery and larceny of property valued above $250.
  • At 9:29 p.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint near Barcelona Avenue.
  • At 9:34 p.m., police responded to a past break-in on Proctor Street.

Sunday, Aug. 18


  • At 2:20 a.m., police responded to a house party on Hancock Street.
  • At 3:54 a.m., police responded to a loud house party on Osgood Street.
  • At 4:45 a.m., police responded to a fight on Osgood Street. Emmanuel Berrido-Santana, 25, of 6 Roslyn St., was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Ramon B. Diaz, 22, of 20 Osgood St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Santiago Ducos, 25, of 61 Congress St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Jose Fabian-Garcia, 21, of 14 Mason St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace.Eric S. Lopez, 21, of 60 Rutland St., Malden, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Francis A. Lora, 26, of 20 Osgood St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Ironelis Rojas, 23, of 11 Harbor St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Carlos Santos-Mendoza, 24, of 83 Congress St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace. Kiauris Sosa-Polanco, 19, of 16 Dow St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace.
  • At 8:29 a.m., police responded to a report of an injured skunk near the intersection of Essex and North streets. The animal was disposed of by the DPW.
  • At 12:19 p.m., police responded to a report of a bat in a house on Hart Way.
  • At 2:52 p.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered near the intersection of Highland Avenue and First Street.
  • At 3:56 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Essex Street.
Other Arrests:

Richard D. Hofacre, 57, of the streets of Salem, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault and battery.

Sean E. Tibbetts, 25, of 115 Stuart Ave., Dracut, was arrested on two counts of assault and battery.
