Salem Police Tell Fatima's Psychic Studio to Turn Off 'Open' Sign

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:


Wednesday, Oct. 16:

  • At 5:37 p.m., police responded to a report of an abandoned bag in the bushes on Laurel Street.
  • At 6:25 p.m., police checked to see if Fatima's Psychic Studio on Hawthorne Boulevard was continuing to operate without a license. When officers arrived they noticed all of the lights were on and the open sign was illuminated in the front window. When officers went inside, studio owner Harry Mitchell told police he wasn't conducting any business and had been told he could keep his lights on.   • At 6:48 p.m., police responded to a report of an elderly woman pushing a cart in the street near the intersection of Essex Street and Botts Court.
  • At 7:39 p.m., a Dow Street woman called police to report that she returned home to find that her house had been broken into and a television and $300 were missing.
  • At 9:33 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Bridge Street.
  • At 11:03 p.m., a man called police to report that his car was vandalized while parked on Derby Street.
  • At 11:39 p.m., police responded to a medical overdose on Gedney Court.

Thursday, Oct. 17

  • At 12:34 a.m., police responded to a medical overdose on Heritage Drive.
  • At 4:54 a.m., police conducted a well-being check on Essex Street.
  • At 8:15 a.m., police responded to a report of a homeless person going through the trash on Wharf Street.
  • At 9:09 a.m., police made an arrest on Federal Street. Gregory M. Benyue, 60, of 16 Scenic Ave., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 9:57 a.m., a First Street woman called police to report that three rings worth more than $20,000 were stolen from her apartment.
  • At 11:35 a.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at the Walgreen's on New Derby Street.
  • At 11:58 .m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at the Congress Street Market on Congress Street. A woman was issued a no trespass order.
  • At 12:09 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Lee Fort Terrace.
  • At 12:28 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant on Margin Street. Jason M. McKenney, 30, of the streets of Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 1:40 p.m., an employee at the Northeast Animal Shelter on Highland Avenue called police to report that a sick kitten was stolen from the shelter on Tuesday. Click Here for our full story.
  • At 3:09 p.m., police responded to a report of an out-of-control pit bull on New Derby Street. Ralph E. Sciarretta, 44, of 22 Prince St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.
  • At 3:39 p.m., police responded to a report of a drunk person on an MBTA bus on Bridge Street.
Other Arrest: 

John J. Shoup, 46, of 260 Washington St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
