Salem Police Charge Driver With Open and Gross Lewdness

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Monday, Nov. 25


  • At 7:45 p.m., police responded to a disturbance on Dow Street.
  • At 8:24 p.m., a woman entered the police station to report a vehicle break-in on Highland Avenue. The woman told police a laptop was stolen from her vehicle while it was parked in the Market Basket parking lot. 
  • At 8:28 p.m., police and fire units responded to a reported structure fire on Gardner Street.
  • At 9:09 p.m., police responded to a report of a person jumping through the drive-thru window at the Dunkin' Donuts on Highland Avenue. Police checked the shop and didn't see anything suspicious. An employee reportedly told police she exits the building via the drive-thru window because she doesn't have the code for the alarm.
  • At 10:08 p.m., police responded to a report of people in a white van shooting BBs at signs near the intersection of Roslyn and Hazel streets. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.
  • At 11:13 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Barton Street.

Tuesday, Nov. 26

  • At 12:33 a.m., police moved along a man who was found sleeping in an ATM on Lafayette Street.
  • At 5:27 a.m., police responded to a report of people trespassing in the basement of a building on Salem Street. Police reportedly found blankets and pillows but no trespassers.
  • At 8:22 a.m., police responded to a report of a man masturbating while driving near the intersection of Essex and North streets. Carlaine G. Verneque, 35, of 4 Willamsburg Court, Shrewsbury, was arrested on a charge of open and gross lewdness.
  • At 9:40 a.m., police responded to a report of an injured swan on Highland Avenue. The swan reportedly flew away before police arrived.
  • At 10:58 a.m., police made an arrest on Pope Street. Jamel J. Johnson, 26, of 12 Pope St., Salem, was arrested on charges of possessing a class D substance (marijuana) with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of ammunition and for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 11:39 a.m., an officer disposed of a hypodermic needle discovered on Highland Avenue.
  • At 2:11 p.m., police responded to a report of a past larceny on Highland Avenue.
  • At 3:21 p.m., police responded to a report of a past larceny on Willson Street.
