Salem Residents Report Sound of Gunshots Sunday Night

The following information was submitted by the Salem Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.


The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 

Sunday, Oct. 6

  • At 4:23 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Smith Street.
  • At 4:29 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant near the intersection of Palmer and Park streets. Juanel Pena, 26, of 4 Lynch St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 5:16 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Congress Street.
  • At 5:47 p.m., police responded to a reported disturbance on Essex Street. Craig S. Labrie, 31, of 40 Bartlett St., Beverly, was arrested on charges of disturbing the peace and two counts of illegally possessing a class E substance. 
  • At 6:51 p.m., police and fire units responded to a reported motor vehicle fire in the parking lot of the Shaw's on Traders Way. It was determined that the vehicle's power steering belt had broken, causing it to overheat.
  • At 7:00 p.m., police responded to a report of a homeless person camping out in the woods off of Collins Street. Police located what appeared to be the remainder of a campsite.
  • At 9:04 p.m., police responded to a domestic assault and battery on First Street.
  • At 9:55 p.m., police received numerous 911 calls reporting the sound of gunshots. Calls reportedly came from Ropes Street, Linden Street, Messery Street, Lafayette Street, Hancock Street, Hathorne Street, Laurel Street, Bristol Street, Ocean Avenue, Forest Avenue and Moffat Road. Police were unable to locate anything indicating that shots had been fire in the area. 
  • At 10:58 p.m., a Grove Street woman called police to report that one of her tires had been slashed.

Monday, Oct. 7

  • At 7:21 a.m., police responded to a report of a past break-in attempt on Gables Circle. A man told police he returned home to find that his rear sliding door had been shattered. 
  • At 8:34 a.m., an officer disposed of a hypodermic needle discovered in the basement of a building on Prince Street.
  • At 11:53 a.m., police responded to a report of homeless people sleeping in a garage on Pingree Street. 
  • At 12:34 p.m., police responded to a dispute between neighbors on Harbor Street.
  • At 2:56 p.m., police responded to a reported shoplifting incident at the Walmart on Highland Avenue.
  • At 4:06 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious man selling shoes near the intersection of Essex and Central streets. The man was sent on his way.
  • At 5:03 p.m., a woman entered the police station to report that she was burned by something that fell from a scaffolding while walking on Derby Street.
  • At 5:41 p.m., police responded to a reported shoplifting incident on Canal Street.
  • At 5:50 p.m., police responded to a report of people drinking on a bench on Essex Street.
