Salem Police Make Heroin Arrest on Traders Way

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Thursday, Sept. 12

  • At 4:19 p.m., a resident entered the police station to report that someone stole a laptop bag from his unlocked car while it was parked near the intersection of Derby and English streets.
  • At 5:04 p.m., police responded to a dispute on Jackson Street.
  • At 5:07 p.m., police responded to a report of debris in the road on Fort Avenue.
  • At 5:08 p.m., police responded to a report of a tree down in the roadway on Gardner Street.
  • At 5:12 p.m., a resident entered the police station to report that someone stole his bicycle from Webb Street.
  • At 5:20 p.m., police responded to a report of kids throwing things at a house on Naumkeag Street.
  • At 5:25 p.m., police responded to a report of a motor vehicle into a building on East Collins Street.
  • At 6:32 p.m., police responded to a report of illegal dumping on Washington Street.
  • At 7:50 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Northey Street.
  • At 10:16 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity near the Shaw's Supermarket on Traders Way. Matthew T. Cummings, 40, of 12 First St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of possessing a class A substance (heroin) and for reportedly having three outstanding warrants.
  • At 10:49 p.m., police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle near the intersection of Boston and Bridge streets.
  • At 11:13 p.m., police responded to a loud party on Lafayette Street. A man told police he was just watching the New England Patriots game and got loud when the team scored. 

Friday, Sept. 13

  • At 2:32 a.m., police responded to a loud party on Hancock Street. A resident was issued a $200 citation for having a loud party.
  • At 4:42 a.m., police responded to a report of women screaming near the intersection of Lafayette and Leach streets.
  • At 8:12 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Lafayette Street.
  • At 9:56 a.m., police responded to a report of an erratic operator on Highland Avenue. An elderly woman was spoken to about her driving.
  • At 11:34 a.m., police responded to a dispute over a parking space on Essex Street.
  • At 11:41 a.m., a pair of handcuffs were discovered on New Derby Street.
  • At 12:40 p.m., police responded to a possible drug transaction on Chase Street.
  • At 1:40 p.m., a Heritage Drive man called police to report that someone slashed the convertible top on his car overnight.
  • At 2:07 p.m., a woman called police to report that someone broke into her car while it was parked in the Walmart parking lot on Highland Avenue.
  • At 2:22 p.m., police responded to a report of a cyclist struck by a motor vehicle near the intersection of Essex Street and Warren Court.
  • At 5:31 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Highland Avenue.
  • At 8:12 p.m., police responded to a report of illegal panhandling on Traders Way.
