Woman Brakes for Squirrel, Hits Pickman Park Guard Shack

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Sunday, Aug. 18

  • At 4:09 p.m., police responded to a report of a family begging for money in front of the Market Basket on Highland Avenue.
  • At  4:11 p.m., police responded to a report of a dying crow on Memorial Drive. The crow was disposed of by the DPW. 
  • At 4:51 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Osborne Street.
  • At 5:12 p.m., police responded to a report of a woman screaming and causing a disturbance on Salem Street. 
  • At 6:25 p.m., a drunk man was placed into protective custody near the intersection of Gedney and Margin streets.
  • At 8:45 p.m., a drunk man was placed into protective custody on the Salem Common.
  • At 8:50 p.m., police responded to a report of kids throwing water balloons on Park Street.

Monday, Aug. 19


  • At 12:04 a.m., police responded to a 911-hang-up on Lafayette Street. Jane A. O'Connor, 45, of 117 Lafayette St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 1:15 a.m., a woman who was issued a no-trespass order was located at 117 Lafayette St. Crystal M. Madden, 29, of 51 Samoset Road, Peabody, was arrested on a charge of trespassing and for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 3:39 a.m., a drunk man found sleeping in a motor vehicle on Leggs Hill Road was placed into protective custody.
  • At 10:03 a.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered on Lafayette Street.
  • At 12:35 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Preston and Marion roads. A woman told police a squirrel ran out in front of her car, causing her to drive into the guard shack at Pickman Park.
  • At 1:14 p.m., police and fire units responded to a small mulch fire near the intersection of Bridge and Washington streets.
  • At 2:12 p.m., police and fire units responded to a small mulch fire on North Street.
  • At 2:37 p.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant on Mason Street. Antonio A. Furtado, 31, of 206 Endicott St., Danvers, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 3:28 p.m., a drunk man found in the bushes near the intersection of New Derby Street and Klop Alley was placed into protective custody.

Other Arrests: 

Michelle A. Cote, 40, of 5 Harrison Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Kenneth Devaney, 36, of 5 Harrison Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of resisting arrest and for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.

Holly M. Szczechowicz, 21, of 344 Essex St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting by concealing merchandise.
