Sting Operation Nets Alleged Salem Bike Thieves

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Monday, July 1

  • At 3:03 p.m., police responded to a report of a group of kids ringing a doorbell on Geneva Street. 
  • At 4:05 p.m., police responded to a report of a tree down on Highland Avenue.
  • At 5:38 p.m., police responded to a report of a man sleeping on a bench behind the Salem Wax Museum on Derby Street. The man was moved along
  • At 5:45 p.m., police responded to a raccoon complaint on Cabot Street.
  • At 6:04 p.m., a man called police to report that his bike was stolen from the rack at the MBTA station on Bridge Street.
  • At 6:33 p.m., a Buffum Street resident called police to report that a laptop delivered to his house was stolen off of his front porch.
  • At 7:18 p.m., police responded to a report of a drunk man walking in the outbound lane near the intersection of Bridge Street and the Veterans' Memorial Bridge.
  • At 8:18 p.m., Salem detectives conducted a sting operation to purchase a stolen $1,300 bicycle that was put up for sale on Craigslist. The owner of the bicycle reportedly saw that it was put up for sale on the website less than a day after it was stolen. Gabriel A. Guillen, 18, of 9 Meadow St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of larceny of property valued above $250. Miranda L. Giering, 18, of 121 Highland Ave., Salem, was arrested on a charge of receiving a stolen property valued above $250.
  • At 9:51 p.m., police responded to a report of people in a pool after hours on Bridge Street. A group was moved along.
  • At 10:00 p.m., police responded to a fireworks complaint on Harbor Street.
  • At 10:01 p.m., police responded to a report of a man without shoes walking in and out of traffic on Highland Avenue. The man told police he was just walking home from Lynn.
Tuesday, July 2
  • At 5:52 a.m., police stopped a motor vehicle near the intersection of Canal and Pond streets. Terrance H. Jacobsen, 32, of 6 Linden St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with a license revoked for operating while under the influence of alcohol.
  • At 6:28 a.m., a Hamilton Street man called police to report that someone threw one of his flower pots out into the street.
  • At 8:56 a.m., police stopped a motor vehicle on Traders Way. Edvin Solis, 22, of 136 Allen Ave., Lynn, was arrested on charges of operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
  • At 9:27 a.m., police responded to a report of illegal trash dumping on Grove Street.
  • At 9:30 a.m., police and fire units responded to a report of a two-year-old child locked inside a motor vehicle on First Street. Firefighters unlocked the car and the child was unharmed.
  • At 9:48 a.m., police responded to a report of a woman sleeping inside a laundromat on Lafayette Street.
  • At 9:53 a.m., police located a man known to have an outstanding warrant on Lafayette Street. Michael J. McCausland, 34, of 6 Linden St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
  • At 12:58 p.m., police responded to a report of a theft in progress on Margin Street. Witnesses told responding officers that they saw a man break into a toolbox and steal tools. David C. Gaudet, 35, of 76 Margin St., Salem, was arrested on charges of larceny of property valued above $250 and malicious destruction of property valued above $250.
  • At 1:59 p.m., police responded to a report of possible drug activity in the parking lot of the Wendy's on Lafayette Street.
  • At 2:56 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Traders Way. 
  • At 3:41 p.m., the landlord of a property on Beaver Street called police to report that one of his tenants said they were planning on destroying their apartment before they were evicted. The man said he just wanted the incident documented in case the apartment was damaged.
  • At 5:02 p.m., police responded to a report of suspicious activity on New Derby Street.
