Alleged Shoplifter Arrested at Salem Home Depot

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Saturday, Oct. 26


  • At 4:18 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Japonica Avenue.
  • At 4:24 p.m., police responded to a report of a religious group being harassed on Essex Street.
  • At 4:38 p.m., police responded to a past hit-and-run motor vehicle accident on Swampscott Road.
  • At 4:46 p.m., police responded to a report of a dead fox in a backyard on Summit Street.
  • At 5:39 p.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Gardner Street.
  • At 6:23 p.m., police responded to a dispute between landlord and tenant on Roslyn Street.
  • At 6:24 p.m., a pit bull puppy with no tags was found wandering on Putnam Street. The owner reportedly picked up the dog at the station.
  • At 6:28 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Bridge Street. Christopher Martinez, 30, of 83 Rtger Slip St., New York, N.Y., was arrested on a charge of shoplifting by asportation.
  • At 6:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a man sleeping in a vehicle on Highland Avenue. The man reportedly told police he was under the influence of narcotics. Joseph R. Sclafani, 37, of 19 Beacon St., Gloucester, was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs.
  • At 6:53 p.m., a woman called police to report that she was being followed near the intersection of Washington Square North and Winter Street.
  • At 8:33 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Margin Street.
  • At 8:59 p.m., police responded to a report of erratic operation near the intersection of Essex and north Pine streets.
  • At 9:26 p.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Lafayette Street.
  • At 9:29 p.m., a Pratt Street resident called police to report that an unknown person has just walked into their residence. Bjorn A. Nichols, 20, of 22 Proctor St., Salem, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing.
  • At 10:02 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Federal Street.
  • At 10:22 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Heritage Drive.
  • At 11:23 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Washington Street.

Sunday, Oct. 27

  • At 1:04 a.m., police learned that a window had been smashed at a building on Washington Street.
  • At 1:26 a.m., police conducted a well-being check on Heritage Drive. A man was placed into protective custody.
  • At 1:26 a.m., police responded to a reported fight near the intersection of Derby and Wharf streets. 
  • At 1:46 a.m., police responded to a loud house party on Lawrence Street. Ryan P. Sullivan, 20, of 49 Lawrence St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace.
  • At 9:29 a.m., police responded to a past vehicle break-in on Porter Street Court.
  • At 11:10 a.m., a resident called police to report that someone smashed a planter through the rear window of their car while it was parked on Piedmont Street.
  • At 12:39 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident on Traders Way. James C. Rivers, 46, of 32 Green St., Wakefiled, was arrested on a charge of larceny over $250 by single scheme.
  • At 12:48 p.m., an Ocean Avenue West resident called police to report that his American flag was stolen from the front of his home overnight.
  • At 1:33 p.m., police responded to a reported shoplifting incident at the Home Depot on Traders Way. Joseph A. Talbot Jr., 23, of 6 Kingdom Court, Peabody, was arrested on a charge of larceny over $250.
  • At 2:16 p.m., police and fire units responded to a report of a fire in a tree on Highland Avenue. Two elderly residents of a building nearby said they saw two teens wearing dark clothing running from the area just before the fire was noticed. Local firefighters extinguished the fire.
  • At 3:58 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Heritage Drive.

Other Arrest: 

Barry E. Bullock, 55, of the streets of Salem, was arrested on a charge of illegally possessing a class A substance (heroin).
