Pit Bull Injured After Falling from Third-Floor Window

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log: 


Wednesday, July 24


  • At 5:31 p.m., a lost dog was found on Cabot Street. The owner was notified and the dog was sent to the Danvers Animal Shelter for safe keeping.
  • At 5:49 p.m., police responded to a domestic dispute on Loring Avenue. Edwin Colon Jr., 34, of 117 Loring Ave., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant. Rita A. Hogan, 65, of 13 School St., Peabody, was arrested for reportedly having two outstanding warrants.
  • At 6:10 p.m., a Harrison Avenue woman called police to report that someone stole a package off of her porch.
  • At 6:42 p.m., police responded to a medical overdose on Washington Street.
  • At 6:46 p.m., police responded to a road rage incident on Lee Street.
  • At 7:11 p.m., a Wisteria Street man called police to report that his vehicle was shot with a BB while he was working on it.
  • At 7:22 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious backpack left on a bench on Essex Street.
  • At 7:25 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious man with a knife on Harbor Street. Police were unable to locate the man. 
  • At 7:27 p.m., police responded to a report of an injured dog on Lafayette Street. A brown pit bull reportedly broke through a screen window and fell three stories to the ground below. The dog suffered "major injuries" and the city's animal control officer was notified. The dog was found to have scarring on its back that its owner said was from an earlier incident. 
  • At 7:34 p.m., police responded to a report of a loose dog on Washington Square South.
  • At 7:42 p.m., police responded to a report of a man drinking out of a brown paper bag near the intersection of Lafayette and Harbor streets. Xavier Marquez, 47, of the streets of Salem, was arrested on charges of drinking in public and disturbing the peace.
  • At 8:28 p.m., police responded to a report of a man sleeping under a tree on Peabody Street. The man was moved along without incident.
  • At 8:46 p.m., police responded to a report of stolen wires on Peabody Street.
  • At 8:56 p.m., an Upham Street woman called police to report that someone stole $2,500 from a dresser in her home.
  • At 9:18 p.m., a Fillmore Road woman called police to report that she believed her son stole $4 from her purse.
  • At 10:16 p.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at the Walmart on Highland Avenue. A woman was issued a no trespass order.
  • At 10:20 p.m., police responded to a report of a woman sleeping in a tent by the church on Essex Street. The woman was moved along.
  • At 10:26 p.m., police and fire units responded to a report of an odor of smoke in a home on Sylvan Street.
  • At 10:41 p.m., police responded to a report of a loose dog on Ord Street.
  • At 10:49 p.m., police responded to a report of two people engaged in sexual relations on a bench on Salem Common. Officers found two people who were clothed and not in a "compromising position". They were moved along without incident.
  • At 10:56 p.m., police responded to a report of an undesirable man asking for money on North Street.

Thursday, July 25

  • At 12:26 a.m., police responded to a report of people fishing off of a pier on Kernwood Street. The people moved along.
  • At 1:29 a.m., police responded to an attempted breaking and entering on New Derby Street. Officers reportedly heard a loud bang and saw a man standing near a mail drop box that had been pushed over on the sidewalk. The man reportedly fled they area as they pulled up. After a brief foot chase, David M. Hanson, 24, of 385 Lafayette St., Salem, was arrested on charges of attempting to commit a crime, two counts of malicious destruction of property valued above $250 and disturbing the peace.
  • At 6:51 a.m., police conducted a well-being check on Highland Avenue. 
  • At 8:37 a.m., police received word that a speedboat was stranded near Palmer Cove.
  • At 12:11 p.m., police responded to a report of aggressive panhandling outside of Deb's Diner on Boston Street. A man was moved along.
  • At 2:52 p.m., police responded to a report of a woman walking in traffic near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Greenway Road.
  • At 3:04 p.m., police made arrests on Washington Street. Jeanmarie Lewis, 39, of 47 Leavitt St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant. William T. Lewis III, 37, of 47 Leavitt St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant. Both were found to be in possession of syringes and admitted to using heroin earlier in the day.
